During the respective year (2020-2021) The Aspiring Medic’s support has furthered its mission to support students around the United Kingdom, who are applying to medical school and come a socioeconomically challenged background. Between 1 December 2020 and 30 November 2021, we have benefited the community in the following ways:- Free career workshops- The Aspiring Medic’s support continues to provide free career workshops for students from less privileged backgrounds. Through providing a space for students to engage with doctors and other healthcare professionals, we have successful helped students in widening their career aspirations, especially as they become inspired by individuals who have come from similar backgrounds. In this financial year we hosted both virtual and physical events, according with government restrictions. We worked with over 5 different boroughs within the city of London to deliver workshops for over 20 schools and over 50 pupils.- Free mentoring programme- we developed a mentoring programme called, Trained by TAMS, which is a 12-month intensive coaching programme for students who are from less privileged backgrounds. During this financial year we providing free tailored mentoring to assist in the career endeavours of 6 students who were recruited in the previous financial year- Free webinars- We have provided a number of virtual webinars during this financial year to assist local students in their revision for GCSEs and A-levels. We are particularly proud of the webinar series launched for medical students from deprived backgrounds which reached over 200 students- Free resources- we have also created a wealth of resources to assist the personal andprofessional development of our service users. These free resources include blogs, interviews and articles- acquiring over 4.9K visits to our website
As per the previous financial year, the company’s stakeholders include students from a socioeconomically disadvantaged background (both aspiring and current medical students),the parents of these students as well as their teachers. We have consistently ensured that these stakeholders are regularly consulted, taking swift action to amend our operations accordingly.Students- after each workshop we take feedback from students concerning how we can ensure workshops are engaging and impactful. This feedback helps in the delivery and implementation of subsequent workshops. We have substantially amended our operations in response to feedback in a number of ways. For example, we have started having more virtual events for students despite relief of government restrictions, as this was largely preferred by service users in some casesParents- we have taken several steps to engage with parents. For example, parents are encouraged to attend the webinars with their students. Their feedback is also gathered after webinars. We have altered our webinars according to given feedback. Additionally, we havealso engaged with parents of mentees to ensure that the programme is of a satisfactory standard. Both prior to and after the programme, parents are consulted with to acquire their feedback. No feedback has been given yet to suggest amendments to operations. However, through the insight that has been gained, a personal contact was provided to parents that they can utilise should they have any queries or concerns.Teacher- teachers have also been regularly consulted in a number of ways. Prior to career workshops, teachers will be consulted, firstly acquiring their permission and then gathering their feedback after sessions. Many teachers have become very much invested in our mission to support less privileged students and have taken on more advisory roles, where we can frequently access and consult with them. We have amended our operations on several times according to their feedback. For example, following teacher feedback we developed a whole a range of educational resources and more bespoke sessions to meet individual school needs
