Now Play This C.I.C. runs the arts festival and related educational activities under the Now Play This title. During the financial year 2020-2021, Now Play This’ activities have benefited the community in the following ways:- Organising an exhibition and events programme in April to introduce the community to new ways of thinking about the climate crisis, and presenting ways to live and work that benefit the environment. - Running a creative lab from April to July for artists and designers to share knowledge learn new skills in creation, game design, critical and analytical thinking, and community engagement skills. - Providing an incubation platform for new and emerging artists to present new work. This became the start of a new strand of commissions which allowed those artists to take their work to a heighted level including international touring.- Now Play This has provided part-time or freelance employment to over 50 people over the financial year.- In a time when the arts were unable to function as they normally would, and audiences had no real-world outlet for arts engagement, Now Play This provided a fully immersive and integrated digital festival for an audience of over 3000 people.
The company’s stakeholders are artists and practitioners who have been involved in Now Play This and have a vested interest in its growth. The directors of the company founded Now Play This as a space for community growth and knowledge sharing, and with the stakeholders advice have grown the company to include a wide community of arts practitioners and game-makers. During the festival and after each event, we asked participants and users of the space to give us feedback on their experience, their typical arts-attendance and habits in the current climate. This helped us respond to audience’s needs in terms of providing community support during the pandemic, and how we could be resilient going forward. Our research enabled us to implement technological avenues for access for our community that were the most accessible, approachable and long-lasting. This allowed participants to continue the conversation around our work and provide further help for our shared growth.
