During the financial year 30 April 2023 Hartslane CIC carried out the following activities:Gallery programme: A series of art exhibitions and events, free and open to everyone. Part of our work at hARTslane is to make the space available to artists and curators to organise exhibitions, screenings, talks and anything art related. In the year we facilitated 31 group exhibitions/events in the space, working with a total of 185 artists.Projects: We design, fundraise and deliver participatory art projects that bring people together.Come Dine in Blue: Throughout 2022, we produced Come Dine in Blue project a year long, project bringing together 130 Lewisham residents with a migrant background to create a Blue-and-White dining room installation that tells personal and collective stories of identity and belonging, redefining heritage, celebrating different cultures and the journey to Lewisham. The programme launched in January 2022 and we delivered 30 creative workshops in total (February-May 2022), in collaboration with 12 artists and in partnership with 8 Lewisham based migrant organisations: Refugee Council – Lewisham Migration Museum The Confucius Institute at Goldsmiths, University of LondonJOY & The Tai-Chi community at All Saints Community CentreAll Saints Church, New CrossBe Seen Be Heard Youth Forum – Young black artists in Lewisham/SE London aged 16-25The Latin-American community of Lewisham & SE LondonThe community of La Placita Mall The project culminated with a 2-week Come Dine in Blue exhibition in hARTslane gallery and a publication (September 2022)Funded by: The Arts Council England, The Heritage Fund, Lewisham CouncilGravel: Launched in March 2022, we delivered 3 events in the 2022/23 year (June & November 2022 and March 2023). Gravel encompasses a series of evening events, showcasing artists who experiment with live and performance based work. Each event features 8 artists, each given a 10-15 minute slot. We want to experiment with something new and create a hybrid between an open mic night and a curated live show. Giving each artist a small slot in the evening, we want to create a space to trial, show works in progress and snippets, giving an insight into how artistic ideas develop and less demand to create finalised and polished work. It also allows communities to feel like they have more of a say in shaping the art that they see. TAP OUT Festival: in May and June we hosted the 3 week long, theatre and performance festival TAP OUT, organised by Goldsmiths, University of LondonSAN - Social Art Network - In June 2022, we gave a talk about the ongoing task to formalise our stay at the premises, and our journey in making improvements to the building, the process of community engagement and capital fundraising. The talk was organised in collaboration with SAN - Social Art Network, of which we are part.Be Seen Be Heard: Exhibition in Este, Italy 8-10th October, 2022. The hARTslane based young artist collective Be Seen Be Heard was invited by Associazione La Medusa to present their Art for Poster-ity exhibition in Este, near Venice. We sent a small committee, lead by BSBH co-ordinators Jada Perry & Flynn Richards. The welcome was extraordinary and the ground for future collaborations was established! Be Seen Be Heard is a platform to support young black artists & creatives in Lewisham & South East London.
After withdrawing our planning application in 2021, we revised our proposed scheme to (refur-bish & change the building we occupy) to be able to include comments from our stakeholders and started a new consultation of the local community. During 2022 and 2023 we carried out additional consultation on the lease and refurbishment of the building with local residents, Lew-isham Council, Resources and Regeneration Team (landlord), Planning and Conservation Of-ficers (Lewisham Council), The Hatcham Conservation Society, The Telegraph Hill Society, designers and architects. An open evening for local residents was held in hARTsane on the 9th of November 2022, following leafleting the area.A revised planning application was submitted in June 2023. Changes in hARTslane Advisory Group: Nikos Akritidis and Sara Willett left the group and Usva Inei, (local queer visual artist and independent art-based researcher) joined in the beginning of 2023.Hartslane Advisory Group Meetings were held on 17th of May 2022 and on 7th of December 2022. Individual meetings with AG members were held on various occasions based on need and expertise. Local Councillors, partner organisations & project participants are consulted through meetings and feedback forms.
