Company activities and impact

Heart of the Woods is a CIC based in West Cornwall providing a diverse programme of educational and social activities within a woodland environment including Forest school, woodland activity days and outdoor experiences. During 22/23, demand for outdoor activities proved high post Covid and we expanded the range of sessions and opportunities available to meet the needs of the local and wider community. Our parent and toddler group remained exceptionally popular and we expanded provision to 3 mornings a week to meet demand. We continued to deliver holiday activities during Easter and Summer holidays, increasing provision during the summer to 3 days a week. These sessions were aimed at young people on benefits related Free School Meals as part of the Time 2 Move Holiday programme and run on behalf of Active Cornwall, we gratefully acknowledge grant funding from Cornwall Council to do so. The aim of sessions was encouraging physical activity, an element of food education and healthy diets alongside enrichment activities. A second breakfast and hot meal was integral to sessions, those eligible for free school meals attended for free, as a result of the funding and we ensured accessibility to all young people by offering spaces to those not eligible through a booking fee, in a small number of cases we provided subsidised bookings. Attendance was high across sessions and feedback from Active Cornwall on our provision was positive. Our monthly Kernow Dads group for dads, grandads, male carers and their children did not resume until June 2022, as the funding received in 2021 had completed. However, we felt this group was essential to the local community and restarted sessions with donations to cover costs of session where possible. From September 2022 to date, we have gratefully received National Lottery funding through Dangerous Dads Network as one of 4 groups in the South West facilitating dad and children sessions. This has allowed us to run sessions free of charge with donations accepted but not required. Information about this group has been widely shared by third party organisations, social prescribers and information services resulting in strong attendance, with numbers of dads, grandads and children averaging 82 a session, some travelling from other areas of Cornwall to attend. We have continued to work with a number of local schools and Early years settings to provide regular forest school sessions or one off woodland activity days for pupils across a range of year groups and ages.West Cornwall Women Aid have attended a number of well being sessions within the woodland and benefited from spending time in nature within a secure private woodland.

Consultation with stakeholders

Children, young people and parents.Schools and Early Years providers. Kernow Dads attendees and Dangerous Dads Board.Key workers from external organisations,Active Cornwall.Feedback has been regularly gathered from groups on interests and outcome needs of participants which informs future sessions and planning. We regularly use thoughts on a postcard as well as reviewing informal feedback and reviews. We are also actively involved in feedback and evaluation sessions with Active Cornwall with regards Time to Move programme and future provision. We have also attended provider engagement sessions.Feedback and evaluation of Kernow dads sessions has been regularly reported to Dangerous Dads and we have discussed our provision with their Board.
