Company activities and impact

Let’s Keep Moving CIC has evolved from the Let’s Get Moving programme, targeting patients in need of activity interventions, giving them the tools and confidence to develop positive lifestyle habits and make new social connections. The CIC was formed from an unincorporated community group who identified a need across Castlepoint to encourage older adults, adults with underlying health conditions and de-conditioned adults to keep active. Our group is aimed at older adults, typically 60+ with little or no disposable income, across Canvey and Benfleet. Through a series of grants we have been able to provide our classes for free. We have created a safe, social, welcoming space with an emphasis on prevention, healthy living and keeping active. Our new model has increased from 54 older adults to 176 older adults who attend our weekly sessions on Canvey and in Benfleet. We invite guest speakers from all corners of the local community to our Let’s Keep Moving sessions and as such we have become an “entry level” opportunity for older adults to start thinking more about different activity types, their health and lifestyle but also find out what other opportunities exist in our area for themselves, those they care for, family and friends. Members have been encouraged to sign up for a weight management, nutritional advice & support service, targeted primarily at those diagnosed obese, overweight, or with Type 2 diabetes or pre-diabetic, high blood pressure or cholesterol (see stats below). We have formed a partnership with the GP Healthcare Alliance outreach teams to offer members the chance to have regular health checks, which include: Blood Pressure, Blood Glucose levels and Cholesterol checks. We also host a wellbeing group that includes CAVS and Adult Social Care alongside the Healthcare alliance. This has seen huge benefits with 2 class members attending hospital for serious underlying health conditions and several patients diagnosed with high blood pressure and attending immediate doctors’ appointments. The Adult social care teams have been able to provide valuable information and support to many of our members.Every Let’s Keep Moving session finishes with 15 - 20 minutes low impact exercise. We have received positive feedback on their improved balance, flexibility and stamina. Over a quarter of our members have joined weekly, hour activity classes, making us an “entry level” into other activities within our community. Every week we have a targeted health talk on a wide range of topics including: Coronary Heart Disease, Diabetes, mental health, healthy joints, losing weight, healthy diets, Falls prevention, "spotting the signs of cancer early" moving off painkillers for conditions such as arthritis, how to prevent / improve osteoporosis and how to live a more independent, mobile lifestyle by increasing exercise and adopting a more healthy lifestyle leading to a “preventative” approach to their health. We work with the local social prescribing teams, physiotherapists and GP's to increase referrals to our friendly, social and inclusive sessions. 42 members signed up for our Weight Management program33 Lost weight (Biggest weight loss 3st 8lbs)Average weight loss 13.7lbs6 maintained a healthy weightONLY 3 gained weight - 1lb eachWe took 6 people from an obese BMI to overweight BMI and 23 are now within the NHS healthy BMI range for Older Adults.
