Mizizi Boys Mentorship is a Community Interest company that empowers disadvantaged young people to develop as individuals and enjoy new challenges through volunteering and social action whilst making a positive contribution to the community. The Community interest group organises football tournaments and other leadership programmes for the disadvantaged young people. Our project has made significant impact in preventing and reducing crime whilesupporting community safety, especially in an area of high deprivation such as Wood End andBell Green we have several ways of achieving this by:.1. Positive male Role Models: by providing mentorship to boys who lack positive male rolemodels in their lives, our organisation can help them develop positive values, attitudes, andbehaviours.2. Building Life Skills: Through one-to-one sessions and sports activities, our organization canhelp boys develop essential life skills such as teamwork, discipline, leadership, and conflictresolution.3. Knife Crime Awareness Programs: Knife crime is a significant issue in many communities, and our organization's knife crime awareness programs can play a crucial role in preventingsuch incidents.4. Diversionary Activities: Our areas often lack access to safe and constructive activities foryoung people.5. Collaboration with Local Authorities: Building partnerships with local authorities, schools, and community organisations is also essential for the success and sustainability of ourproject. Collaborating with the police, schools, and other relevant stakeholders help identifyat-risk
Our steering group of 25 members had face-to-face group meetings with 285 people in Coventry. These people include youths (16-25 years), youth leaders, women organisations, unemployed, youth football team, youth charity organisation, religious leaders, community leaders and others using focus group discussion. The aim was to investigate factors influencing youth crime and the best prevention method due to the high rate of criminality. 70% participants claimed it is attributed to isolation, peer pressure, domestic violence and money. While 86% agreed that lock-down restrictions aggravated crime. Elsewhere, 76% suggested football events as the best strategy to disengage youth from crime as it will keep them active and engage. For instance, one of the youth leaders, Mr Benedict (who is also a footballer), argues that sports offers an important opportunity for building life skills for youth at-risk; allowing them to better cope with daily life challenges and moving away from crime or drug usage. Another 78 % of participants proposed that youth interactive workshops should be used to educate, empower and redirected them from crime. This was how the steering group developed this project further, by combing both recommendations (football competitions and workshops) as the unique strategy to prevent youth crime.
