Company activities and impact

Community Scrap Shack continues to divert tonnes of redundant reusable materials from landfill back into re-use for the benefit of the local community whilst at the same time protecting the environment. lt is estimated that within years every landfill site in the UK will be full, so the work we do is vital to the well-being of not only our local environment but also to the future of the planet as a whole. As footfall was still reduced we decided to continue trading on reduced days (Tue, Wed, Sat) and review the situation throughout the year, however with the increased pressures of rising utility costs and reduced volunteer numbers, the review of hours was postponed until Spring 2023.Collections from companies restarted with resources sourced from, F&B paints, webbing and fabrics from a previous contact Kiniki Swimwear. In May we were approached by a local pottery supplies company and offered a large volume of new craft resources previously purchased for sale online. The company had changed its business profile and was looking to dispose of the stock quickly. To accommodate the stock we purchased a storage container, sited on our car park and began collecting the resources over the next 8 months. The new stock has provided much needed new resources which has increased sales noticeably and lead to a rearrangement and expansion of the shop area.We participated in the restart of scrapstore swaps, to exchange resources and visited Gloucester Resource Centre in May and again in September. We also collected resources from WRE scrapstore who were sadly closing after over 25years of trading. In March we trailed a monthly Chat & Craft session to tackle isolation and loneliness. The sessions gave people the opportunity to meet, chat and share crafting interests. Due to difficulties accommodating the new craft stock we had to cancel some sessions and did not successfully promote those we did run. We therefore decided to postpone the initiative. Membership uptake still remains low with schools and organisations continuing to restrict creative activities since covid. However we still attract increasing interest from Day customers and have therefore noticed a shift in sales from scrapstore bulk purchases towards individual shop purchases. Due to accessing a large quantity of new and unused craft resources we were able to capitalise on this and extend our shop areaOur CIF funding application was unsuccessful so our plans for developing projects and producing additional resources from our scrap materials has been postponed.

Consultation with stakeholders

Stakeholders continue to include all users of the Scrapstore and our volunteers, with feedback taken directly and through our media sites. Consultation continues to include the organisations and agencies accessing our facilities and workability placements, working with vulnerable adults and those requiring additional support to regain workplace experiences. We continue to work with Newcastle College, VAST and Regent College, Kembell and Abbey Hill Special Needs Schools (supporting young adults with learning disabilities). Our Community RePaint Scheme continues to support individuals & organisations on limited budgets and the introduction of the Free Paint section has proved very popular, supporting groups, individuals and community artists to access affordable resources. Following requests from crafters for workshops we introduced Chat and Craft sessions which are still being trialled. Our volunteers still contribute daily and input into directing the planning of services and the resources/products we have available.
