Activities and Impact on Communities: Company directors Jennifer Farmer and Seta White, along with app developer Samuel Overington, delivered 4 community outreach workshops with Canons High School, Edgware, London, receiving input from the young people on the content of our new opera, Link In My Bio. The students participated in drama, creative writing and computer science activities in exchange for feedback on the opera’s characters, story and interactive technology.Jennifer and Seta participated in a development workshop with Dr Ellen Helsper of LSE on addressing digital inequalities that might impact our audiences and their engagement with our work.Jennifer, Seta and producer Penelope Saward, participated in two interactive dramaturgy sessions with Tasso Stevens of Coney, developing our approach and techniques of creating participatory experiences for audiences.Jennifer, Seta and co-composers Charlotte Marlow and Dirty Freud, attended a week’s residency in Luxembourg, developing the opera’s approach to co-creation, performer’s agency and non-traditional scoring. During the residency, we worked with European artists who are also actively dismantling hierarchies within opera-making and are centring communities in their creative practice. With the opera’s movement director Kane Husbands and designer Simon Kenny, we explored creative approaches to engaging and incorporating local communities into the creative approach when the opera tours. We also identified European audiences resident to Luxembourg who are impacted by the opera’s themes of marginalisation, disenfranchisement, radicalisation and social deprivation. The week’s residency resulted in a sharing of the work-in-progress.With our creative team, we participated in a week’s residency at Britten Pears Arts. For this residency, we implemented our approaches to non-hierarchical scoring and audience participation, to have a better understanding of what will work as part of our methodology. The residency culminated in a sharing where we invited feedback from the audience on the opera’s creative content, community engagement and audience participation.
For the workshops with Canons High School, as well as the May and November 2022 sharings, the workshop participants and audiences were consulted for their feedback and suggestions on both the project and our approach to developing it. This consultation, along with our work with Dr Helsper and Tassos Stevens, has shaped not only the creative work, but our policy and approaches to community engagement, digital inequalities and audience participation. For this period of activity, the major stakeholders for the company are the community outreach participants and audience members.
Directors Jennifer Farmer and Seta White received remuneration for their freelance artistic and facilitation work on the development for the new opera.Total remuneration received by Jennifer Farmer was £2518 and total remuneration received by Seta White was £2673
