LINK IN MY BIO PRODUCTIONSDirectors’ Report, Oct 2023Creation and Delivery of Performance WorkIn November 2022, we delivered an hour’s performance of our new opera-in-progress, Link In My Bio. To create and develop this material, we engaged 16 freelance artists and arts professionals, participating in 2 intensive residencies supported by Britten Pears Arts and Les Theatres de la Ville de Luxembourg, with additional funding and support from enoa (European Network of Opera Academies). Of these artists, this was the first time 7 of them had worked in opera. All of the18 people members of our creative and production team were from identities who are underrepresented or marginalised, be it as people of colour, women or non-binary, those with disabilities, those who are LQBTQIA+ or from working-class backgrounds. Many of our team hold several of these identities simultaneously, therefore reflecting the audiences we create with and for.In January 2023, we began discussions with the University of Greenwich and the head of the School of Stage and Screen, Misha Meyers, on the potential of a partnership between the university and the company. This is with the focus of researching the creation of a blueprint for sharing our co-creation and non-hierarchical methodologies with other opera-makers and organisations.Working with Young People and CommunitiesWe also facilitated community outreach workshops with Canons High School, Edgware, London in order to inform the opera’s themes, characters, narrative and points of interactive technology. As this area of London is home to underrepresented, communities impacted by the opera’s themes, it was vital for us to engage with them on making an opera they would like to see. The students participated in drama, creative writing and technology development activities, exploring how creativity crosses disciplines. Their input has influenced a professional opera production at such a fundamental stage.

Company activities and impact

Activities and Impact on Communities: Company directors Jennifer Farmer and Seta White, along with app developer Samuel Overington, delivered 4 community outreach workshops with Canons High School, Edgware, London, receiving input from the young people on the content of our new opera, Link In My Bio. The students participated in drama, creative writing and computer science activities in exchange for feedback on the opera’s characters, story and interactive technology.Jennifer and Seta participated in a development workshop with Dr Ellen Helsper of LSE on addressing digital inequalities that might impact our audiences and their engagement with our work.Jennifer, Seta and producer Penelope Saward, participated in two interactive dramaturgy sessions with Tasso Stevens of Coney, developing our approach and techniques of creating participatory experiences for audiences.Jennifer, Seta and co-composers Charlotte Marlow and Dirty Freud, attended a week’s residency in Luxembourg, developing the opera’s approach to co-creation, performer’s agency and non-traditional scoring. During the residency, we worked with European artists who are also actively dismantling hierarchies within opera-making and are centring communities in their creative practice. With the opera’s movement director Kane Husbands and designer Simon Kenny, we explored creative approaches to engaging and incorporating local communities into the creative approach when the opera tours. We also identified European audiences resident to Luxembourg who are impacted by the opera’s themes of marginalisation, disenfranchisement, radicalisation and social deprivation. The week’s residency resulted in a sharing of the work-in-progress.With our creative team, we participated in a week’s residency at Britten Pears Arts. For this residency, we implemented our approaches to non-hierarchical scoring and audience participation, to have a better understanding of what will work as part of our methodology. The residency culminated in a sharing where we invited feedback from the audience on the opera’s creative content, community engagement and audience participation.

Consultation with stakeholders

For the workshops with Canons High School, as well as the May and November 2022 sharings, the workshop participants and audiences were consulted for their feedback and suggestions on both the project and our approach to developing it. This consultation, along with our work with Dr Helsper and Tassos Stevens, has shaped not only the creative work, but our policy and approaches to community engagement, digital inequalities and audience participation. For this period of activity, the major stakeholders for the company are the community outreach participants and audience members.
