North East Sikh Service C.I.C. (NESS) provides speakers to schools, colleges, community and other groups who wish to increase their awareness and understanding of the Sikh faith and community. It also provides ‘hosts’ to visitors to attend at a Gurdwara. The company’s work increases awareness of the Sikh community and faith across a range of service users from throughout the wider community and in doing so promotes community cohesion. By providing speakers who can give explanations and demonstrations and respond to individual enquiries from service users the service gives additional benefit over other learning that could be achieved through eg. books or websites. Visitors to the Gurdwara are able to see first hand and actually take part in activities such as Langar (community kitchen) and Seva (community service)The company's main service users are educational establishments. There has been a high demand this year for the service not only from educators teaching about Sikhi as part of the national curriculum requirements but also at higher levels of religious education and as part of a wider cultural learning. In addition to education providers the company has visited/hosted groups from the wider community such as the Scouts and the Rotary Club. The Company has also taken part in various interfaith events throughout the region. The Company does not charge any fee for providing a speaker or hosting a visit to a Gurdwara. All speakers and hosts are volunteers drawn from the local Sikh community. Any expenses of the Company are covered by donations. This allows even those service uses who are limited in funds to access the service.
Consultation is carried out individually with each service user prior to the visit to ensure that its content is tailored to their particular requirements. A large proportion of most visits is given over to questions from the visitors, allowing them to direct the content themsleves. Where feedback is received after a visit this is used to plan improvements to future activities.Descriptions and photos of visits attended/hosted and other activites are given on the Company's Facebook page and feedback on the visits are often left on these posts
