Year Ending: 28 February 2023

Company activities and impact

EAT WELL GET WELL CIC WAS INVOLVED IN DELIVERING THREE COMMUNITY-BASED NUTRITIONAL AND LIFESTYLE EDUCATION PROGRAMMES IN ARDWICK, LONGSIGHT AND WHALLEY RANGE FOR LOCAL PEOPLE WITH A DIAGNOSIS OF TYPE 2 DIABETES OR PRE-DIABETES. THE PROGRAMMES WERE ENTIRELY FUNDED BY NHS GRANTS AND WERE PROVIDED FREE TO PARTICIPANTS. IN ADDITION EACH PROGRAMME PROVIDED COOK AND TASTE DEMONSTRATIONS OF HEALTHY RECIPES SUITABLE FOR DIABETIC PATIENTS. CULTURALLY APPROPRIATE RECIPES WERE DEVELOPED FOLLOWING CONSULTATIONS WITH PARTICIPANTS, AS MANY OF THEM HAD SOUTH ASIAN, AFRICAN OR CARIBBEAN HERITAGE AND WISHED TO MAINTAIN SOME ELEMENTS OF THEIR TRADITIONAL FOODS. THE PROGRAMMES ALSO PROVIDED INGREDIENT PACKS (FREE) TO PARTICIPANTS TO TAKE HOME AND PRACTISE THE RECIPES THEY HAD SEEN DEMONSTRATED. TUTORS AND COURSE LEADERS ALSO PROVIDED ADDITIONAL GROUP SUPPORT ONLINE AND ON A ONE-TO-ONE BASIS IN BETWEEN THE FORMAL INPERSON SESSIONS, WHERE SPECIFIC NEEDS TO BE REQUIRED THIS.

Consultation with stakeholders

STAKEHOLDERS DURING THE FINANCIAL YEAR 2022/23 INCLUDE MANCHESTER RESIDENTS REGISTERED WITH A GP PRACTICE IN ARDWICK, LONGSIGHT AND WHALLEY RANGE; THE GP PRACTICE STAFF IN THOSE AREAS; HEALTH DEVELOPMENT CO-ORDINATORS WORKING FOR THE NHS IN THOSE AREAS; VOLUNTARY AND COMMUNITY SECTOR GROUPS.. CIC WORKERS ATTENDED GP NEIGHBOURHOOD MEETINGS TO FEEDBACK ON PREVIOUS PROGRAMMES DELIVERED AND CONSULT WITH GPS AND STAFF ON WAYS TO IMPROVE REFERRALS AND CRITERIA FOR FUTURE PROGRAMMES. HEALTH DEVELOPMENT CO-ORDINATORS AND NHS COMMISSIONERS WERE ALSO CONSULTED VIA THE GP NEIGHBOURHOOD MEETINGS. CIC WORKERS ALSO ATTENDED AND HELD INFORMATION STANDS AND SESSIONS AT COMMUNITY EVENTS, CHURCH EVENTS AND MOSQUE EVENTS TO RAISE AWARENESS OF THE EAT WELL GET WELL PROGRAMMES, PROVIDE BASIC HEALTHY EATING INFORMATION AND IMPROVE REFERRALS AND RECRUITMENT. AS WE ARE AWARE THAT SOME OF THE MOST MARGINALISED AND DEPRIVED COMMUNITIES HAVE EXTRA DIFFICULTIES ACCESSING HEALTH AND CARE SERVICES, CIC WORKERS ALSO VISITED ENGLISH LANGUAGE CLASSES PROVIDED BY MANCHESTER CITY COUNCIL FOR RECENTLY ARRIVED RESIDENTS FROM OTHER COUNTRIES, AND PROVIDED INFORMATION SESSIONS ON HEALTHY EATING (VIA INTERPRETERS) AND HOW TO GET REFERRED ONTO ONE OF OUR PROGRAMMES SHOULD THEY WISH.
