Layman Media CIC was granted £14,715 by Arts Council England towards our first project which was the creation of an artist book designed specifically with people, for who reading and writing tends to be a barrier, in mind. The book will be sold as well as copies given for free to members of our community who need financial or educational support. A series of talks and workshops will accompany the launch of the book. We anticipate the launch of this book will benefit our community by creating events and products that are more geared toward people for whom traditional education formats are a barrier to the arts. The book is the first step toward creating a more accessible way into the arts for people who currently experience psychological and/or cultural barriers in the Arts, Heritage and Culture sectors. This project will allow us to collect important data and feedback to influence better and more targeted projects in the future. We are excited for the coming launch and optimistic that we will really be able to gain valuable feedback and insight that will help us grow more around the needs of our community.
In the development of the current project we held multiple meetings and feedback conversations with members of our community who are curious about the Arts, but for who current formats present a barrier to entry. From these talks and discussions, we created the current project (creating of an artist book) as a first step to addressing and amending some of the challenges faced by our community. We look forward to revisiting those meetings and getting feedback on how we did and where we can improve for our next steps.
