Urban Goodies is a Community Interest Company set up to alleviate food poverty, provide nutritional meals and tackle disadvantage in our community. We do this by providing a welcoming safe space at local community centres, where we provide lunches, ready meals, community fridge and cookery classes. We believe nutritious food and education should be accessible to all and aim to have zero wastage from our donated food. Since 2021 we have been providing cookery classes, community cafe, pop up food stalls, suspended meals & affordable ready meals to our community, cooking fresh food, where possible surplus & ensuring nutritious meals are available to all. With the benefit of a grant from Hubbub we managed to purchase and open a Community Fridge in the Holbrooks Community Care Association in August 2022. The aim of the fridge is to fight food waste and support local people. It does this by collecting leftover food from businesses, then making it available to local residents and community groups. This includes individuals with limited access to affordable fresh and nutritious food. Community Fridges are sociable places where any member of the community can exchange surplus food. They aim to reduce food waste and provide a space where locals can share food and household items, skills, recipes and more. They are open to everyone, and work on a spirit of trust. Anyone in the community can donate and anyone can take. The new fridge builds on the success of the existing 150 fridges in the Community Fridge Network, which redistribute on average of almost 6,000 meals per fridge each month. Alongside distributing surplus food to reduce waste, the fridges also offer a place where residents receive food saving advice and recipes, so they can save money and reduce food waste at home too. The community fridges have also helped strengthen household and community resilience by holding community food growing activities to help residents become more food secure and using the space as food co-operatives.Over 1320 families have benefitted from our community fridge per week since July 2022 which relates to over 6,000 meals received. To date we have managed to redistribute over 3 tonnes of food to our community. We have a huge cross section of visitors to the fridge, which is currently open twice a week. Due to the cost of living crisis we are seeing more and more people attending, as we do not operate a means tested criteria and the fridge is open to everyone, many hard to reach (such as working families and the elderly) access the fridge. Over the last 12 months we are pleased to say that many do not feel the same stigma or marginalisation that those who attend social supermarkets or foodbanks do; this was one of the key objectives for us, in order to ensure a higher take up from those persons who are harder to reach in our community. One of the key reasons behind this take up was the introduction of our ready meal project, which encouraged our community to the fridge to collect but also broke down barriers as they were purchasing the meals and made to feel less like they were receiving handouts. Our ready meal project was launched in January 2023, it was the logical step after opening the fridge and seeing ourselves how much surplus we could use and thanks to a pilot grant from Heart of England Community Fund we were able to offer this innovative co-operation between fridge and ready meal. We hire the kitchen at the community centre, twice per week. With the volunteer support of a dedicated experienced chef we produce 2 meals per week of restaurant quality, as a ready meal, designed to be heated up in the microwave or stove, thereby cutting down significantly the cost of creating these meals. The meals are hugely discounted thanks to the grant from Heart of England and Hubbub, partially for the food costs and also thanks to the volunteering hours of our chef.
