WOMEN RISE UP COMMUNITY INTEREST COMPANY

Directors' report period ended 31 March 2023

The directors present their report with the financial statements of the company for the period ended 31 March 2023

Principal activities of the company

This reporting period is our first year of operating. During this period we have conducted focus groups to understand the needs of our stakeholders and how we can as a coaching and training company serve them. We met with local organisations that worked with similar stakeholders to understand what their experiences have been.We were successful in receiving two small grants from Lancashire BME Network to support the planning, delivery, and synthesis of the focus groups. We also shared our findings with them which fed into their county-wide strategic needs and impact report. We were also successful in our application to The National Lottery Community Fund - Awards for All which gave us the capacity to deliver services that focused on minoritised women in leadership. We offered one-to-one coaching and workshops. The funding ends in January 2024. Unfortunately one of our directors went on long-term sick for 6 months, which didn't bring our work to a standstill but slowed the momentum. At the time of starting the company, we decided that we would develop the company at a pace that is manageable and impacting. Focusing on quality more than quantity. We have been successful in receiving the Community Tech - Discovery Fund from Power to Change which explores the potential of a tech solution in supporting a BME woman on her leadership journey. We are excited at the potential this research can mean for our stakeholders and our company. We are committed to working with everyday women who don't hit the criteria for statutory support and those who are overlooked by society. We look forward to reaching more women in 2024-2025.

COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT

WOMEN RISE UP COMMUNITY INTEREST COMPANY

Company Number: 13945872 (England and Wales)

Year Ending: 31 March 2023

Company activities and impact

Women Rise Up was set up to empower women, address their wellbeing and development needs. Through a one to one and one to many model, that should start to improve their socio economic knowledge, gain and develop financial autonomy. Primarily targeting the BME (Black and Minoritised Ethnic) community and any women who may be marginalised or need this type of support in Lancashire and beyond. The CIC began operating in March 2022. During the financial year 2022-2023 the company's activities have benefited the community in the following ways:- local BME women were consulted to understand what their needs and what support means to them. This is the first time for many women where they have a space to voice their opinions without fear of any repercussion. They found a sisterhood through shared experiences.-BAME widows who faced social isolation and are financially, emotionally and practically dependent on family members, were able to come together to share their feelings while creating a patchwork blanket that was donated to the local community centre. This patchwork blanket symbolised the beginning of their life beyond their family, giving them hope and a sense of self and accomplishment.-we sponsored leadership training for 16 professional BME women and have been able to offer one to one coaching and mentoring to 5 women. Through this training they have been able to develop the confidence and self belief that they can be leaders as they have the skills needed of leaders.

Consultation with stakeholders

The company's stakeholders are Black and Minoritised Ethnic Women who are from the local community and professionals. The directors are BME women who represent the two cohorts of women we serve. The focus with the community women is to provide them with the space to connect; thereby reducing isolation, and make choices and decisions for themselves thereby building confidence and autonomy. The focus for professional women is to equip them with the skills to face intrinsic and extrinsic challenges that they might face through systemic, structural and cultural barriers in becoming leaders and taking on decision making roles.-We consult with our stakeholders at the beginning of each year through surveys and focus groups. We tap into local networks and organisations. Our research has indicated that our stakeholders are BME women that don't meet the criteria of statutory support and who fall between the cracks. Older BME widows forgotten by family and society and professional BME women because they work and manage family life, their needs are forgotten about.-We have a steering group of women who represent our stakeholders and who support and believe in what we are aiming to achieve with our company. We have appropriate terms of reference in place.
