Company activities and impact

General ongoing activityWhilst the focus has evolved from the ‘Covid crisis’ to the ‘Cost of living crisis’, along with the general stress of staff shortages, exhaustion and burnout amongst NHS and Emergency services sectors, FAST continued to offer up to 4 free of charge sessions to all UK healthcare (public and private sector) and emergency services workers. The uptake was steady with noticeable surges during unsettled. Increasing signs of Post Traumatic Stress (PTS) symptoms were noticed in those accessing our support. This confirmed the need for us to continue our service and strengthened our resolve to support the augmenting mental health crisis in this sector. The pre and post sessions’ Survey Monkey questionnaires we carry out, showed that FAST continued to receive 100% positive results from all those who took up our offer of support. There has been a minor change in the website’s Access Support form to invite clients to donate towards FAST ongoing running costs if they are in a position to do so. It is also made clear that FAST have pledged to continue to offer sessions who are not in a position to do so. Fundraising ActivitiesFAST put considerable effort, engaging a consultant in the fundraising field, into a National Lottery application, but unfortunately were unsuccessful. The reason given was that the organisations we help should be investing in and providing mental health support to their staff. This was a disappointment.Two FAST volunteers offered to set up and run a CROWDFUNDING campaign in May aimed at raising funds for the care home workers. From past requests for support, staff from this sector have been particularly adversely affected since the Covis crisis, though do not receive much press attention into their plight. The campaign was a success, and as a result FAST has been able to increase offerings to this very worthwhile sector and other connected services with excellent and appreciated results. Emergency Services Show NEC Birmingham- September 2022 FAST was again awarded a stand in the Health & Wellbeing Zone and a team of FAST practitioners attended to network and raise FAST’s profile. There was a definite shift noted from the previous year in that visitors to the show from various NHS/ES sectors were seeking FAST out, and approaching us with interest to learn what we could offer. Founding Director Wendy Stoten was invited to make a presentation on the Health & Wellbeing stage at a prime-time slot on the second day. This focused on the results from the research project carried out by FAST in collaboration with university researcher Sunita Pattani as a result of the Gloucestershire Police trial findings, into the mis-usage/over-usage of the term PTSD in undiagnosed cases, the adverse consequences that could ensue, and solutions to resolve this issue. This included changing the inappropriate POST and DISORDER in PTSD, to CONTINUOUS and RESPONSE leading to the term CTSR. When FAST practitioners used this new term with clients, progress was more forthcoming in both speed and engagement of clients, leading to more effective outcomes.This generated interesting discussions after the presentation, an around the possibility of FAST becoming potential providers of wellbeing within an organisation. Emergency Services Mental Health Symposium, Silverstone- November 2022FAST Founding Director was invited through the Royal Foundation to attend this symposium, and made the journey from Cornwall for the 2 days of presentations and networking. An informative and successful trip, with particular contacts made with the South West Ambulance Service with good potential for a provider partnership. The Director of the Royal Foundation personally thanked FAST on behalf of all the Emergency Services for the selfless work, dedication and pioneering spirit that FAST has displayed and represents. He stated that the services would be in a healthier position if there were more organisations with such integrity and compassion as FAST. Social MediaFAST has maintained a social media presence through Facebook and LinkedIn throughout this year with postings of various activities and in response to media news around the Healthcare and Emergency Services. Internal FAST developmentFAST’s excellent Human Resources team continued to develop a more formal system and procedure for new FAST practitioner recruitment, if and when we need to expand our team of practitioners, to ensure we maintain consistently high-quality delivery of our service. The procedures are also in place for Volunteer recruitment for other roles such as fundraising, accounts, social media etc. FAST WebsiteFAST’s volunteer website support has continued to maintain and update our FAST website. This has made a significant difference on first impressions and credibility to those visitors to our site including those who wish to access our support, and also those interested to learn more about FAST with potential for future collaboration.

Consultation with stakeholders

FAST Directors Regular online meetings take place whenever strategic decisions or courses of action need to take place. Informal communication is also encouraged to keep up to date with developments.FAST VolunteersRegular online meetings have been held to which all FAST volunteers are encouraged to attend. They are recorded for those unable to do so. These meeting seek to uphold and demonstrate adherence to FAST’s values, namely: KAIZEN (continuous improvement); Golden opportunities in everything; Win win win for all concerned. Updates on FAST progress is given, and brainstorms are carried on for future ideas eg to expand FAST’s reach, to attract donations, to seek funding. Volunteers who are interested in a particular area are welcomed to form sub teams to help the Founding Director to implement these ideas. Feedback is given via the closed FAST Practitioner FB group and in subsequent meetings and comments and discussions are always welcomed. The FAST Practitioner FB group is also useful as a place for sharing and peer support. Volunteers post media articles of interest which others are able to share on their own pages with introductory comments around its relevance to FAST’s offer of support etc. Founding Director Wendy Stoten keeps an open-door mentoring policy for any volunteer practitioners who wish to discuss and get advice in confidence around issues presented by their individual FAST clients.Clients via FAST’s website ‘Access support’ channelHaving received the request for support, these clients are matched with a FAST practitioner to start receiving support as quickly as possible. The practitioner is from then on in charge of delivering the support. The client is made aware that pre and post Survey Monkey questionnaires are used to support their progress and also to give an indication of the effectiveness of the support to allow FAST to measure their success and make improvements if needed. Clients often provided additional testimonials with permission for FAST to share anonymously with just initials and job titles.
