The company runs Chill East Lothian, offering free sea dipping courses for people with mental health issues within the local community. Each course involves 1 session (1hour) every week for 8 weeks with a Chill coach and qualified lifeguard present to provide support, reassuranceand guidance.Established in March 2022, the company secured funds to complete an 8 week pilot course, between August and October, to determine the interest and potential success of this service. This benefitted the local community in the following ways:>The pilot course provided 16 local people with the opportunity to experience the many mental and physical health benefits of cold water therapy in a safe and supported environment.>Evaluation of the pilot course highlighted that additionally to the benefits of cold water therapy participants gained social benefits provided by a new network of friends within the community, sustained following the course.>Over the 8 weeks participants were taught safe swimming practices allowing them to confidently continue sea dipping themselves once the course was completed – learning a worthwhile sustainable skill.>Funding allows this service to be provided to local residents free of charge removing any financial barriers to potential participants.>The courses provide a service to address the increasing prevalence of depression and anxiety within the local community.>The service provides paid sessional work for 5 local people.
The companies stakeholders are the funding providers and local residents who will participate in our courses. The directors of the company have lived in the local area for a number of years and are passionate about sharing their love of sea swimming and the benefits it can have on mental health with others. The pilot course was funded by the North Berwick Area Partnership, a local organisation with the interests of the local residents at its core. A detailed application process occurred highlighting why we felt our service was needed (research showed an increase in depression post COVID pandemic), what benefits our service would provide to local residents and how we would deliver these before any funding was granted. The funders had a detailed continual evaluation process occurring before, duringand after the pilot course to monitor its success in delivering the benefits promised and highlighting any recommended improvements for future courses. The pilot course was advertised and quickly all 16places were filled, with a long waiting list highlighting that local residents were very keen to participate. The participants on the course also completed evaluation forms following the course to highlight the strengths and weaknesses of the course and how it could be run better which have been used when planning our courses for 2023/24. The coaches and lifeguards have also completed these evaluations which have led to improvements in the running of future courses.
