The Law Incubator during its first year has been consulting with the legal sector and legal educators to assess the challenges and issues being faced by young people as they transition from education to practice. We have been building networks and communities of practice to examine the most effective opportunities for the Law Incubator to undertake. We have worked with IFATE and are chairing and leading on the development of a barrister apprenticeship. This has included working with legal regulators on an occupational standard which has been submitted in October 2023 and educators on how an apprenticeship would be delivered. This work has been voluntary. It has taken longer than anticipated to shift the Law Incubator from being a CIC to a CIC that is trading. This is expected to change as of January 2024 when paid work will begin.
The stakeholders include barristers chambers, Crown Prosecution Service, Bar Standards Board, Legal Services Board, legal educators, individual barristers and Bar Council. The barrister apprenticeship has been the central focus of the consultation and has enabled wider conversations about issues on a regional and national basis particularly with the criminal bar where there is a shortage of barristers. The collective of stakeholders is growing and the Law Incubator has been instrumental in leading the discussions and bringing stakeholders together.
