Parishwide Health and wellbeing Support Community Interest Company (PHAWS-CIC), a Catholic ethosed company, was set up as a project by two parishioners of a local Catholic parish church, Our Lady of Lourdes Lee London SE12,( https://www.olol-lee.org/ ) to apply for funding and pilot activities related to health and wellbeing support which would benefit the Church’s parish community. The company has not employed staff in its first financial yearThe company has not traded any services in its first financial yearPrior to its launch the company set up a company bank account .The company invited members of the parish church via the parish newsletter to join the PHAWS-CIC project to be launched 11th Feb 2022.Three individuals volunteered. The company founder and co-director is a registered nurse who provides pro bona non-invasive health signposting, health promotion/awareness raising and provided professional health advice on behalf of the company within a voluntary position. The company’s first activity was in providing one-off mental health awareness talks during Children’s Mental Health week in Feb. 2022 to teachers and the parents/guardians of schoolchildren of the Catholic parish’s primary school -St Winifred’s. The teachers benefited from a face to face session and parents from an online session with a choice of three different times to suit their availability. A weekly coffee morning group called Wellbeing Wednesday was started in the church hall to be the launchpad for the proposed Parish Nurse pilot project. The group was advertised in the parish newsletter in the first instance . 8 individuals who regularly attended were utilised as a focus group in the development of Wellbeing Wednesday . Additional individuals attended over the following months with 20 separate individuals having attended. The group termed itself a fellowship group with a focus on health (mind body and spirit) and wellbeing. The main benefit for the group was friendship ; access to a registered nurse for blood pressure checks; personal health signposting and advise, additionally provided was a health topic talks with tools based on the 5 ways to wellbeing (https://www.nhs.uk/mental-health/self-help/guides-tools-and-activities/five-steps-to-mental-wellbeing/) An optional spiritual prayer session was held in the last half hour of the Wellbeing Wednesday morning. Two volunteers facilitating the spiritual prayer sessions had attended the Guild of Health and Raphael 4 x 2 hour online workshop called Everyday Healing -An Introduction to the Christian Tradition which allows the church/Christian company to apply for the Bronze tier of the Healthy Healing Hub project. (https://gohealth.org.uk/hhh/what-is-an-hhh/) Members benefited from experiencing spiritual practices such as prayer, meditation, breathwork in a non-proselytising approachNetwork activity continued with the parish’s primary school Head Teacher. A coffee morning group called Talk Tuesday was planned to launch in Childrens Mental Health Week Feb. 2023 This company activity was for the benefit of parents/carers of schoolchildren , to attend in school premises after morning drop off of their children. It’s objective was to provide the support from a registered nurse and a children’s mentor (both volunteers for the PHAWS-CIC) within a peer support model with a format that was similar to Wellbeing Wednesday. Unfortunately the group could not come to fruition at that time due to unforeseen circumstances and was therefore put on holdThe company assisted a local Church of England parish church- St Luke’s Downham (https://stlukesdownham.org.uk/) in the re-launching of it’s own Parish Nurse project. The company obtained £500 from Churches Together in South London (https://www.ctslondon.org.uk/welcome.htm) for this ecumenical initiative. The money was planned for the Parish Nurse mandatory training provided by PNMUK. The company registered nurse provided voluntary wellbeing support service to The Front Room Club members of St Luke’s a few hours a week over several months in preparation for the Parish Nurse Service.Much of the activity in the first year was in setting the direction of the company ,recruiting volunteers and new company directors ; establishing a partnership with PNMUK for the setting up of the Parish Nurse project and building the Wellbeing Wednesday coffee morning fellowship group’s potential to facilitate the proposed Parish Nurse Service project.
The first tier of Company stakeholders were members of the Wellbeing Wednesday group, a core of 8 individuals provided input in to how the morning sessions were structured and provided feedback about new activities. The term of being described as a ‘Fellowship Group’ concerned with health and wellbeing materialised from this feedback. The company planned to consult with potential stakeholders for the Parish Nurse project ie statutory community health and social care organisations ; social prescribing groups and local community groups within the parish boundary after the registered nurse had completed the mandatory Parish Nurse training (April 2023)
