Ishara Press CIC was set up in March 2022. In our first year of operation, we established the necessary start-up infrastructure for the company: writing a detailed business plan with support from a business development advisor, working on website development, setting up office arrangements, and developing a job description and advert to hire a part-time Assistant Editor for our second year of operation. For the field of sign languages and Deaf Studies, we worked with an academic publisher in Germany (De Gruyter Mouton) to put in place a co-publishing agreement for two book series. A co-published book entitled “The social condition of deaf people” appeared in the series “Sign Languages and Deaf Communities”. According to the agreement, all books are made available online as Open Access (that is, free of cost) after a grace period, so deaf communities will benefit by accessing these free online books.Working on collaboration tools in the form of Serious Games focused on the design and development of a new series called “Regen-D” (for regenerative design). This game profiles initiatives in the sustainability/regeneration field by curating a selection of multimedia files that is combined with a game choreography. The game can be used for dissemination, onboarding, fundraising, networking, etc, which benefits the published initiative as they can make their work known in new and engaging ways. It consists of a physical game made from plywood with integrated QR-codes linking to the multimedia materials, and an optional accompanying ebook. Towards the end of the year, we developed and launched a call for recruiting members of the editorial board for this series. We worked on the first volume of the Regen-D series throughout the year with an ecovillage initiative based in rural eastern India. After repeated prototyping, we arrived at the final design. Working on this game also involved training the ecovillage partners in this gamified method of publishing, which was enriching for them.
One category of stakeholders are initiatives working in sustainability and regeneration. We worked with one such initiative to prepare for the first publication in our new "Regen-D" series. This initiative is located in India at Shikha Ecovillage in the state of Odisha. We worked with these stakeholders towards compiling the first Regen-D game and ebook. The topic of Regen-D no. 1 is “Water management at Shikha Ecovillage”, and the game is published in both English and the local language(s). Our ecovillage partners, who are also the authors of this Regen-D publication, have given us continuous feedback on the visual design, physical format, technical details and content of the game. For example, they explained that spoken components should be in Sambalpuri (the local language of western Odisha), but written components should be in Odia (the official language of the state, which is used for writing). We have implemented their feedback at various points throughout the design process.
