Diff-Ability aims to create opportunities for people with Down’s syndrome and learning disabilities. Sometimes working in collaboration with others to create a stronger community and share skillsets. Sometimes acting as a platform for self-advocates to have their voice heard.Diff-Ability co-produced and distributed ‘welcome to the world’ packs to Hospitals and new parents across the UK. Supporting good mental health of new parents, signposting to support and giving baby the best start in life. 2023 saw us taking part in an NHS video showing how they benefit parents, babies and staff. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=--m7D4EWckM&feature=youtu.beHappy Mums Foundation Collaboration, continuing a mental health ‘Time for me’ support group, for parents of children with Down’s syndrome, disability & Autism to chat openly about their struggles and any mental health needs they may have. Supporting good mental health and signposting to support where needed. 2023 saw us start co facilitating a face to face group based in Penrith, Cumbria.Just for fun Makaton choir, ran by people with Down’s syndrome. Keeps Makaton in regular use as a form of communication. Creates a friendship group to support good mental health and wellbeing.Our online ‘open mic nights’ have seen people with different abilities joining us from across the globe, sharing their talents, having fun, promoting positive mental health and wellbeing, reducing the feeling of isolation. Big Blackpool get together 2023 for families from the Down’s syndrome community had a weekend Holiday at Haven. We also had a Blackpool Zoo meet up.We have had some get togethers with parents and children.Continuing Collaboration with AuPeer, bringing peer support to parents who have Autism themselves
Subscribers are asked what they would like to see happen, which dates, which area and at what times.Other local groups are asked their opinions and where possible collaborations are made to create a stronger community, reach more people and share our skillsets to support our wider community.
