Company activities and impact

Merseyside Dementia Friendly Radio (MDFR) is an independent, online radio station that is run in collaboration with, and for the benefit of, those who live in the Liverpool City Region/Merseyside whose lives are affected by dementia. The 24/7 broadcast is carefully curated to serve as a reminiscence resource whilst also providing reality orientation, mood management, self-care reminders and signposting to local services/groups. MDFR also aims to keep people up-to-date with dementia related news, events and research findings. Every aspect of the station is given utmost consideration to ensure that the content and the ways in which it is experienced are as dementia friendly as possible. Launching in February 2020 the radio station has developed a range of programming which suits the needs of people living with dementia including, a range of music from different eras, reality orientation, self-care reminders and signposting to dementia related groups, events and services. The benefits to the community include:- Providing people living with dementia, who may otherwise be excluded, with a radio station dedicated to their needs- To keep the community updated on current issues related to dementia and ways to support themselves or others living with e condition- To help people living with dementia feel connected - To promote the benefits of music and audio resources for those living with dementia

Consultation with stakeholders

The company stakeholders are people living with dementia, carers and loved ones of people living with dementia, professionals working within dementia services and academia and others who are interested in dementia. The directors all have an interest in, and experience of dementia. One of our directors is a person living with dementia. Three directors have experience of caring for loved ones with dementia and two are academics working in the area of music and dementia. As pandemic related social restrictions were eased, stakeholder consultations became easier to conduct. Much of the consultation was still conducted via online meeting platforms, but in-person meetings also became possible. Stakeholder consultations were conducted at the Dementia Information Day at Bridge Chapel Centre in September 2022, the Service Users Reference Forum, the Mersey Care Memory Group sessions and a great number of small/one-on-one meetings with people living with dementia, carers, dementia care specialists and dementia focussed academics. The purpose of these consultations was to ensure the content of our broadcast was relevant, suitable and dementia friendly. These consultations are ongoing and have continued to shape the work of the station. Local services have worked with people living with dementia to create playlists for the station which ensure that the music played is meeting their needs. Content for the station has been developed by people living with dementia, health professionals and researchers in the area.
