Transition Turriefield is a community run social enterprise growing fruit and vegetables for the Shetland community. Our Grow Shetland project is now in its second year. This year, post covid restrictions, we have been able to increase our work with individuals, community groups, statutory organisations and schools to establish growing projects and grow more of their own produce. The Grow Shetland project works in partnership with the Shetland Islands Council to improve access to quality fresh produce for low income households and go some way towards improving food security for the Shetland Isles. In the 2022-23 financial year the Grow Shetland project we have:- Delivered six face to face workshops with a total of 66 participants, providing information on improving soil health, organic growing, increasing biodiversity, undercover conditions and dealing with pests and diseases- Delivered 16 online workshops, covering similar topics, with an average of 20 participants for each workshop- Supported 3 community groups to plan their growing spaces and increase community involvement; visiting their sites and drawing up plot plans- Worked with 5 statutory organisations to establish plan or develop their growing plots for their user groups. Participants of these organisations are often vulnerable or low income households- Continued to support our 3 geographical Growers Groups (north, south and west mainland) to share knowledge and encourage food growing in their communities - Supported our Grower Mentors to work with 16 individual households across Shetland to mentor them in their food growing- Worked with six schools to develop their growing spaces- Hosted 2 school visits at the Turriefield site for a total of 24 pupils- Delivered 2 workshops in schools as part of their health week programme- Delivered two information and learning sessions for school groups as part of the Shetland Islands Council climate change festival with a total of 35 pupils- Continued to work with teachers to design the Growing Foods in Schools learning resource https://www.growshetland.co.uk/resources-for-growing-food-in-schools/ - Visited 10 individual growing plots to offer information and advice specific to the site- Provided Turriefield site visits and Q&A sessions for 26 individuals- Given growing advice via social media, email or telephone to 37 individuals- Edited and uploaded 6 workshop sessions as resources for course participants- Filmed, edited and uploaded 3 information videos- Added 3 information factsheets to the Grow Shetland websiteWork to grow food for the local community continues, with the equivalent of 45 boxes going out to households through the veg box scheme or rural shops. Produce is grown with volunteers committing over 6000 hours over the 12 month period.
