The Thelmas WMC develop and produce professional productions, and deliver workshops for minoritised women in order to create opportunities for those who have traditionally been overlooked, or are underrepresented in the arts. During the financial year 2022-2023, the company’s activities have benefited the community in the following ways:Undertook training in trauma-informed practice in order to ensure our work meets its aims and outcomes in a sustainable and safe way for artists, facilitators and participants.Developed and delivered a series of workshops for young women in a PRU (alternate education provision) exploring Creative Disruption with the aim of reclaiming the word ‘disruptive’ through different forms of creative arts. Teachers noted transformative behaviours in participants and greater engagement with staff and other pupils as a result. This project provided employment for freelance artists, and allowed young women excluded from mainstream education to develop creativity and build self confidence in their skills.Applied for national and international funding to create and deliver participatory activity to benefit women of all ages in the UK, related to performance projects. These projects allow participants to engage in theatre and performance activities, and find ways to connect to each other through their experiences.Continued development on theatre projects exploring issues faced by minoritised women not often seen on stage, including intersectional stories of queer love, alternate historical perspectives, domestic violence, and abuse of power. Built relationships with libraries, arts venues and charity partners to further the development an audio project exploring global stories of civil disobedience, giving voice to women & non-binary stories of resistance, and a play about two young women living in India during the time of Partition, giving voice to several generation of South Asian Diaspora families, and queer people of all ages. Advocated for greater equality in the arts & cultural sector, and amplified the messages of charity partners through signposting audiences to different campaigns.
The company’s stakeholders are women and non-binary artists of all ages and experiences. The directors of the company have worked as freelance artists for 15+ years and design company activity in response to the changing landscape of the theatre industry, based on their experience of talking to other artists. They also reflect current social and political issues affecting women globally. We held sessions inviting women artists of different disciplines to interrogate the ‘canon’ of British Theatre in order to challenge society’s value of work created by women, in order to inform future projects and overall company mission.
