Common Works Gallery benefits the local community within Merton by showcasing local artists and providing them with a platform on which to share their work. Additionally Common Works creates free arts events for the local community involving the network of artists they have created. For the period of 30Mar22-31Mar23 Common Works Gallery organised the Artists Open Studios across the borough of Merton. 60 artists exhibited and sold their work across 25 venues.The Open studios took place over 17/18 September 2022 weekend. The trail was located in artists’ houses and studios across Merton including the Potting Sheds in Cannizaro. The studios were open from 11am-5pm. Common Works Gallery then marketed and promoted the event across the borough.A digital guide to the locations was easily downloadable with paper versions also available. It showed venue addresses and information about each artist’s work. Visitors were then able to create a route to visit the artists that interested them. No appointments were needed. Some artists put on one-person shows at home whilst others hosted fellow artists alongside their work.
A survey was sent out to participating artists after the event.91% rated the event a 4 or 5 out of 5 overall82% of artists made salesFor 26% of participants, it was their first time of exhibiting their work86% said they would participate again in the future
Directors Katharine Rowe and Katie Preston were each paid a project fee of £200 for organising the Merton Open House Art trail.The event was financed by each artist paying a fee of £60 per venue. Additionally Coombe Residential, a local estate agent, sponsored the event with £1,000 and put up estate agent boards outside each of the venues. The income was spent on map design and printing, poster design and printing to promote the event and online asset design and promotion (ie paid advertising on social media like Instagram).Additionally web design and social media PR were provided by external suppliers.
