2022 saw the start of the war between Ukraine and Russia with man Ukrainians having to flee, there was also news of Black Ukrainians, some of whom were already refugees having trouble getting out of the country, there were organizations that popped up to specifically support Black Ukrainians to leave the country. Stroud Against Racism saw an opportunity to support anti-racist work globally and worked with the Stroud Red Band to raise money for the Ukraine aid efforts. On this occasion we raised £820. In May we organized a fundraising event for Ukrainian refugees split between both GARAS to support incoming asylum seekers and refugees and also the Global Black Coalition to support Black Refugees at-tempting to leave the Ukraine. The event raised £2697.25 which was paid directly to those organizations. With another fundraising event for refugees given to GARAS in September 2022.SAR held several stores over 2022 to raise funds by selling T-shirts i.e. at both Stroud and Dursley Pride to also support an inclusive environment for Stroud District and support the most marginalized society who are on the receiving end of discrimination. We also supported a stall run by Together with Refugees - Stroud District to raise funds for GARAS and ourselves at Stroud Goodwill evening in December 2022. Whilst Stroud doesn’t have a formal Jewish community - there are lots of people of Jewish heritage in the town, with a wide range of religious and cultural affiliations. The local Jewish community ran a holocaust Memorial Day, we had a member attend the Holocaust Memorial Day and give a speech at the request of local people of Jewish heritage. March 2022 saw our Souls of Gold event, which was set up to give Women of Colour in Business to promote their businesses and opportunities. SAR has been going through a period of transition with the membership much reduced and the Directors burnt out, we had to cut back on what we could deliver whilst we have been regrouping and reforming and looking for new volunteers to take over. April 2022 saw SAR request an independent review of our complaint against the Constabulary. The complaint focused on imposed confidentiality agreements and complaints from the public about stop and search not coming before the appropriate scrutiny panel. Our complaint was upheld after independent review and a meeting held with the Police & Crime Commissionaire in August. This resulted in a review of the confidentiality agreements and the way the com-plaints were handled.A further meeting, with the Comms Manager, was held to discuss misogynistic and racist accounts on Twitter (x) that were being followed by some of the Constabulary’s accounts and the use of Thin Blue Line insignia and its association with the far-right in both the US and UK. A review followed and dubious accounts were un-followed.Sadly, the review relating to our complaint moved at a glacial pace and SAR was excluded from the consultation process. Lack of proper engagement is frustrating, but we remain determined to follow through on the deficiencies we’ve identified.
In November, SAR undertook a Strategic Planning Exercise, with core members to develop priorities and a plan of action for the next two years. It also aimed to refine the core mission, objectives and values for the organization going forward.During the Strategic Planning Exercise, the group conducted a review and assessment of SAR’s current status, reviewed current goals and achievements and discussed future objectives and goals and their feasibility, using a SMART lens (Specific, measurable, Achievable Realistic and Timely). The group prioritized developing anti-racism partnerships in Stroud District, Gloucestershire and surrounding areas, policy campaigns around maternal health, education, police and health, increasing SAR’s visibility, increasing our volunteer membership, mapping and building a better understanding about our community, event planning, and improving our financial health and management. The second phase of our planning process was to organize a community consultation to encourage wider discussion, feedback and buy-in on SAR’s key objectives. Around 30 people from the community attended. There were several presentations about SAR’s past work, and a summary of outcomes of the Strategic Planning process. The goals and objectives were displayed around the room, and the participants had the opportunity to affirm, question or add additional priorities. There was also opportunity for feedback and input into what additional things SAR should be engaged in. This was taken into consideration in the final SAR Planning documents.
