Bare Towards Better – Bare Productions continued with our online resources to better educate the public. This included highlighting issues on LGBT+ and building a round table to discuss important issues facing actors from marginalized backgrounds. The public were able to access this and learn about minority groups. We acted as a platform to amplify the voices of those often unheard. This was further enhanced by us adding a new EDI officer to the board and beginning to work with groups such as Staged Trust and Waverly Care. Bare Productions – This year we were able to grow to three productions. This included RENT which was a musical set against the backdrop of the AIDS pandemic in the 1990s. We worked very closely with Waverly Care, an Edinburgh-based charity whose mission is to end the stigma around AIDS and HIV. They were able to help us shape the blocking and give real-life workshops with those living with HIV and also those who are needle-users to inform the more harrowing scenes in the musical. We managed to do a second Fringe production – Little Women which was entirely run by female-presenting creatives. The musical explored the well-known novel and was a resounding success at Edinburgh Fringe. We also cultivated new writing working with two Edinburgh-based writers. This new musical was called “No Spray, No Lay” and focusses on the female experience on a night out set in the ladies’ bathroom. Again, this was received positively and allowed for new creative theatre to be developed.
Our stakeholders are 40 cast members of RENT, Little Women and No Spray, No Lay, 14 performers at outreach events such as fundraisers for Waverly Care, owners of Paradise Green where the production took place. With regards to our customers, cast members and instructors we regularly conduct both anonymous feedback surveys using SurveyMonkey as well as open-forum video calls where stakeholders can feedback on their experiences and can drive change for the future. From this we are continuing work with the community, fostering new relationships with other charities and continuing to have wider social impact. We have continued to hold polls on social media to steer the company. This has included taking suggestions of what our 2024 productions should be as well as ideas for new initiatives. We regularly have phone calls and meetings with our venues to ensure we maintain excellent relationships and that we both serve the community in the best way we can.
The director received £500 (2022: £400) for services provided as Creative Director for “Kinky Boots”.
