Local Champions exists to build a better future. We are catalysts of change that empower people and places to fulfil their potential. Particularly with an emphasis on supporting women’s and youth from the global majority through enterprise, sport, and technology.From January 2022 to January 2023, we delivered the following projects which are community co designed, co created and delivered for community wealth and socio economic benefit:1. The Secret Sauce Accelerator programme with Un Age , funded by LLDCand Tower Hamlets. We as individuals in Local Champions designed the 12week business accelerator, recruited the cohort of over 30 businesses, majority of which were from non-white backgrounds and from lower income neighbourhoods and families. This was a food and beverage accelerator that went on to deliver 12 masterclasses, our bespoke framework for wellbeing and mental health check ins, 12 supper clubs, and a celebration day. These largely female led businesses were able to secure new clients, build a peer network, develop their business plans and models, secure new spaces to trade and more. Entrepreneurial loneliness was reduced as well.2. The Thanet Youth and Community Centre enterprising sessions - we deliver enterprising and entrepreneurial sessions to the youth club for those completing their level A & B with Better to enable young people from the Haverstock ward of London and Camden to develop freelance and entrepreneurial skills to improve career aspirations, employability and for those interested in entrepreneurship develop a business model. We used a mixed methodology that combines the Agency methodology from BAC with our own Business modelling activities and practical case studies to empower the youth to know that they are capable, reduce limiting beliefs and build critical thinking. We delivered 6 days of workshops around introduction to entrepreneurial skilland mindset to over 20 young people.3. We co designed our mothers and care sports for development project using the grant by Sport England tackling inequalities fund, forwarded by active communities, which developed into a weekly free to access football sessions with childcare for mothers in East London. The project Brough together stakeholders including academics, mothers who play football, young people on our mentoring programme, and institutions like the good growth hub and SHIFT to help design and develop how we could support young mothers and carers, particularly those without support who have become in active or looking to access health and wellbeing activities but are unable to do so due to the existing barriers such as high child care costs and a lack of self belief due to increasing isolation. This project is one of our bespoke co created solutions to health and wellbeing in East London.4. We supported Hubbub and GLA to incubate and develop the greenercommunities project, supporting residents leading the project in East Londonwith fundraising and infrastructuing capacity building support to scale theproject and develop leadership skills. This projects helped us enablegovernment and local charities to support residents in the green economy.5. We started the Haringey Bid & Grant Masterclasses commissioned byaccess health and wellbeing activities but are unable to do so due to theexisting barriers such as high child care costs and a lack of self belief due to increasing isolation. This project is one of our bespoke co created solutions to health and wellbeing in East London.4. We supported Hubbub and GLA to incubate and develop the greenercommunities project, supporting residents leading the project in East London with fundraising and infrastructuing capacity building support to scale the project and develop leadership skills. This projects helped us enable government and local charities to support residents in the green economy.5. We started the Haringey Bid & Grant Masterclasses commissioned byHaringey Council economic inclusion team in November 2022. This project went on to support over 70 social entrepreneurs with 6 masterclasses in bid and grant writing, and they went on to secure over 300K in funding due to our support which will have created a number of ‘good’ work jobs and which we monitored and continued follow on support in the next year.6. We attended and put on a number of social and career events such asspeaking at the Global entrepreneurship week and hosting a panel discussion with over 50 attendees at the Broadwater farm community centre in Tottenham. Attendees were mostly female and from the global majority and went on to describe the event as honest, informative, supportive, helpful and the type of events they need in the area.7. We developed and designed the YEA lambeth programme with Economy of Hours and Peabody communities that would be delivered in 2023 supporting young entrepreneurs in Lambeth over 8 to 12 weeks.
Our stakeholders are local residents from hackney, tower hamlets, Newham, Waltham Forest, haringey, Camden, lambeth, and Wandsworth.Our stakeholders are also academics, individuals from government such as economic leads and councillors, mental health and wellbeing professionals, private industry and peacemakers. In each project, we follow a distinct and bespoke methodology that follows this pattern:1. Co design first : t all starts with listening. We engage with as diverse people groups as we can. We prioritise understanding the needs and the solutions already available within our community. We call this process Co Design. We do this through participatory workshops, street engagement, local talks and forums. We’re always learning and trying to do this better.2. Then employ locally : Once we know what we are trying to do and what those we are serving want to happen, we employ local enterprises, facilitators, partners to help move forward. We invest in the local economy for economic growth, opportunity and inspiration.3. We lead with positivity : We engage positively. A positive mindset is the base on which we are built. We believe and together we build dreams.4. We engage networks of trust : We engage partners, collaborators, and funders into the process to scale ideas into projects, reach new audiences and share what we’ve learned. We value partnership. We build networks of trust.5. We think differently : We love testing new models. We embrace innovation. We appreciate disruption and we love feedback.Exploring is how we got here. Listening is what lets us stay. Improving is what makes us unique. Our strength is in Thinking Differently.6. We shift the balance : After we adapt, improve and scale the service, product or programme, we SHIFT the balance. Because we follow this co creation methodology for each of our projects and consultancy and pieces of work, our stakeholders are consistently consulted ateach stage of the project. More heavily during the co design and co creation phase that starts each project but also during through hiring those with lived experience and engaging networks of trust for continuous feedback and support. Loughborough university did a dissertation on our methodology which you can find online and demonstrates how our co creation methodology and models of consultation with the community lead to higher engagement, impact and trust for our work. Ultimately, we make sure that each decision is that of collective design byusing design thinking, participatory methods, and our lived experience todeliver meaningful experiences and impactful work. This means that over 100 hours of consultation are done regularly during each project scope. We always check in with the community and others as we are in delivery as well to see if we can marginally improve the outcomes to benefit those we serve.
