Community Learning Fellowship runs educational activities from our dedicated site near Lacock in Wiltshire. We have two projects, Griffin Club and Aspiration Hub that we oversee. Griffin Club is an education project providing 3 days of skills-based and creative learning on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays for 10-14 year olds that are registered as home educated. Our building offers a great learning space where children meet, discuss and brainstorm their ideas. We offer spaces for up to 15-20 children at our dedicated new building, where we provide a plethora of educational courses and activities with experienced Mentors across a broad range of subject areas. We offer some limited subsidised bursary places (this year we offered 2 bursaries out of a total of 15 children), which we hope to expand as the project grows. We also offer Alternative Provision for children aged 9-16, through a separate offering, Aspiration Hub, which runs from the same premises on Mondays and Fridays. Through the Aspiration Hub, we cater to local schools and local children who require an alternative approach to education because mainstream school does not suit them, or because they may need some time out from mainstream education for various reasons in accordance with alternative provision sponsored by Wiltshire Council (e.g. additional needs, looked after children or children with anxiety etc). These children will have an EHCP (education healthcare plan) which sets out their learning outcomes, and we work closely with schools and the local authority to ensure that the children that would most benefit from our educational approach are placed with us. These children need something that is hands on, and skills based to provide them with a broad range of opportunities for learning that is different to what they get in school, and which will provide them with future vocational opportunities. Our focus is on developing our resources in these areas where we can offer more of these vocational/ skills-based learning opportunities (e.g. woodworking, cooking, farming, arts etc).We provide a professional, safe and fun environment for them to learn these skills, where the students can develop a positive attitude to learning and gain in confidence so they are able to return to school and continue their studies. Over the past year we have also been developing our offering to provide after school and weekend activities with experienced providers. We have a sewing and knitting club, art classes, martial arts lessons and community days which run on a regular basis and are open to all children in our local community. There are also adult classes for art, yoga and music on offer. All profits from the businesses we run are reinvested into the community – either through offering lower prices or bursaries for our education projects, or through investment into other resources that enhance what we offer to our community.
We undertake regular communication with our community through meetings, newletters and social events. In Griffin Club, the children are consulted about projects that they are interested in, which we then help to facilitate. We also adopt a democratic approach allowing students the opportunity to give ideas, and including them in discussions about various aspects of their learning environment including how to improve our offering, setting agreements and developing a culture that is inclusive and safe. At Griffin Club we meet with parents and students on a 1-1 basis at least once a term and we also hold community meetings where we hear feedback from our community. In Aspiration Hub we work alongside schools and local authorities to ensure that we meet the needs of our students and support their learning outcomes. We meet with schools and LAs as and when requested, and provide them with reports on the student’s activities and progress. We meet with our community through our monthly community days that are open to all people involved in our projects and anyone the local community who wants to come and find out more about what we offer.
