Memories to Scrapbook CIC was set up to help families make memories with their child if they suffer from a life threatening or life limiting condition. From the 1st May to 30th April I have been building up rapport with two main children's hospices - Acorns in the West Midlands and also Douglas Macmillan Hospice. A lot of my main work however has been with The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust Charity, where donations have been given to their children's and neonatal ward. When I first set up the company I had some money donated that was used to develop memory making boxes to give inspiration to families for how to make memories within the home, hospital or hospice when their child a life limiting condition but were also unable to go out. Various items were included for them to use as well as a booklet with ideas and a scrapbook as a keepsake. The first 10 memory making boxes went to The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust Charity. They were very well received and gave staff ideas of things that they could do to help families in similar situations. Further funding from the Wolverhampton Voluntary Sector Council meant that I was able to provide further craft making boxes to families both within the hospices and that they could give to families to use at home. These boxes were themed and allowed families to have fun and create keepsakes with their sick child that will last a lifetime. It also created time for families to spend time together and have some problem free time. 20 boxes were donated to Acorns children's hospice and 20 boxes were donated to The Douglas Macmillan Hospice. I have also been able to have various conversations with families and professionals for the best way to make memories in situations where families are restricted by their child's medical condition.
I had a lot of in-depth conversations with Acorns Children's Hospice family workers when I was establishing what items would be most appropriate to be used in the memory making boxes. I had personal experience of what worked in the type of situations families I was targeting were facing, however they were more aware of the language to use on the website and in the booklet so it could be handled sensitively. They were very keen on the boxes being developed as it wasn't a service they had ever heard of before could hear instantly how families could benefit. I had their support instantly and the same enthusiasm was met when I spoke to The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust Charity as The Douglas Macmillan Hospice. After receiving the boxes I started getting calls from the hospice for ideas of memory making activities they could do when children were admitted for end of life care as well as families who the hospice told about my service when their child or baby was newly diagnosed. Families have said it's nice to be able to make the most of the simple moments and have someone to talk to, that can relate to their situation reducing fear and isolation.
