COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT

GREEN CITY HERITAGE CIC

Company Number: 12172206 (England and Wales)

Year Ending: 31 August 2023

Company activities and impact

Green City Heritage exists to collect and protect Sheffield’s green heritage, to support the City’s people to explore their relationships with that heritage and engage communities through meaningful projects. During the previous financial year we were aware that the formation of the company had achieved several of its initial aims but had also changed to adapt to the impact of both COVID and the needs of groups. We identified that the company was no longer the best organisation to deliver the wider aims, especially having supported other organisations and groups to develop in their journeys to support Sheffield's communities to explore and engage with Sheffield's nature and green heritage. During this financial year we maintained relationships and ongoing non-funded projects, such as:- Our community Learning Woodland- Community and group heritage and project development support - Our Community Tree Nursery continued to provide free access to matured trees for planting in the city - including community allotments, private land with 'rights of way' and schools. Our Community Tree Nursery will now be supported by one of our partner organisations and friends, Kids Plant Trees, who will continue the work we started and develop the space in the pursuit of their own mission to engage children and young people in nature and re-wilding. We ceased trading this financial year to prepare for closing Green City Heritage as a CIC in 2024.

Consultation with stakeholders

GCH’s stakeholders over the last year has primarily been the local networks of community groups and organisations who are keen to support nature recovery, nature-based learning and development, and increasing children and young people’s engagement with nature. This year we have focused on listening to what other organisations and groups are doing, especially those we have supported and partnered with who are now in better financial and infrastructure positions to deliver similar aims and objectives to our work. Although we have developed meaningful relationships with other organisations and groups, as well as freelance individuals, we recognise that now is the right time to close the company and allow individual members such as our company Director to contribute and volunteer with other better placed organisations and groups in their own ways.
