Company activities and impact

Shrinking Space continued its mission and principal activities - to develop interdisciplinary projects to foster collaboration between the environmental sciences, communities, and culture. Our work is always interactive and inspires community connections, and positive behaviour change in relation to ecological, and environmental issues. We are driven by a commitment to promoting distribution of knowledge, critical thinking, and lifelong learning. Our main activities are currently focused on: artistic-led climate literacy and increasing biodiversity through innovative and creative land use and management while building community togetherness, and supporting scientific & ecological institutions to engage in culture-led public engagement.Recent and continued long-term projects include:Wildflower MeadowThe continued project development of a wildflower meadow to increase biodiversity and bring a rural, elderly, and isolated local community together, and promote positive mental health & wellbeing through increased contact with the outdoors, nature and creativity. Wildflower meadows are one of the rarest habitats in the UK, having lost 97% of them since the 1930s. We also continued to engage artists in a residency programme to help uncover informal local folk knowledge, which connects personal, plant and place-based heritages and other usages for wildflowers with material or medicinal and other properties.

Consultation with stakeholders

We engage all stakeholders in project evaluations after working with us, and or taking part in a project to ensure aims/outcomes are met and voices are listened to. Through this work, we also ensure ourwork is fully accessible and meets the needs of those involved. We also stay in touch with stakeholders over the long term and send evaluation correspondence several months after events to understand the longer-term impact of participating in the project/work.We also use our website and social media to gain an understanding of broader audience responses to project-based work. As a company, we always aim to involve local practitioners in our work, those withlived experience of the issues we seek to address, and individuals that are under-represented in the cultural sector.
