he Proper Blokes Club provides weekly walks for men in 9 different locations across London. These walks provide a safe space for men to walk and talk about issues affecting them.Whilst the initial focus of the group was men’s mental health, the walks promote good healthand improved general well-being. Many of our members have indicated that attendance attheir weekly walk is the most important part of their week in terms of maintaining positivemental health. We currently have 240men registered for our walks, with an average weekly attendance of 60In addition to our weekly walks, we have provided 4 ‘Big Walks’ during 2022-2023. These areorganised on a Saturday to give men from all our locations an opportunity to come together, tomeet men from other groups and spend time walking and talking together in a variety oflocations.During 2022-2023 we have extended our provision with a weekly drop-in session inSouthwark. This enables men who are either unable to physically attend their local walk, orwho need support in between walks, to pop in for a chat and to discuss issues which may beaffecting them.An important part of our provision is the Group chat we provide for provide for all members. These are monitored and moderated by Walk Leaders and provide an invaluable daily checkin for members. Walk leaders will respond to any member experiencing difficulty..Impact of activities:We regularly receive feedback from our members with many reporting improved well-beingand improved mental health.‘It’s become part of who I am.david da silva (southwark)It has given me purpose.james walker (southwark)I’m part of a community. I’ve moved around a lot and for the first time I don’twant to move.ed gibson (greenwich)We maintain strong links with our local community leaders, including local councillors (someof whom occasionally attend the walks to show support). Walks are advertised widely on localsocial media sites and are positively received by community members.
Stakeholders are men aged 18+ resident in London or adjacent areas. We regularly consult our stakeholders on a range of topics. Typically, this is done through theirwalk Chat Group and occasional online feedback.Feedback is sought on the effectiveness and impact of their local walk, timings, route etc.For wider strategic issues we have a Walk Leaders group, where the leaders of each walkprovide feedback on the effectiveness and impact of their local walk and support andguidance is offered on any issues they may have to deal with.A ‘Big Walk’ group has been established to consult stakeholders on the location, date anddistance of Big Walks. We have adjusted our Big Walks to fit in with the needs of ourmembers based on feedback received. The club Directors meet regularly to discuss funding and finance and to decide on thestrategic direction of the club.
