Year Ending: 31 July 2023

Company activities and impact

Maverick Learning Community (MLC) facilitates learning opportunities for up to 18 home educated young people, two days per week, 36 weeks (on average) per year. The young people who make up the Community range in age from 8 to 13. During the 2022-2023 financial year, MLC has benefitted the local community in the following ways:-While all of the young people we serve in Buckfastleigh are 'electively home educated,' mainstream schooling would not be accessible to many, due to schools' increasing difficulty in meeting SEND support and access needs well. MLC's commitment to approaching our work through the lenses of disability justice and the Neurodiversity Framework has supported our young community members well.-MLC offered a variety of educational activities, based on the young people's interests and curiosities.-MLC has supported home educated children to access a vibrant community of peers, providing an abundance of social and emotional learning opportunities.-MLC has provided support to local home educating parents by providing high quality child care.-MLC has provided part-time work for three local residents.

Consultation with stakeholders

Maverick Learning Community's (MLC) primary stakeholders are the young people who attend our childcare setting, and their parents and guardians. MLC consults directly with the young people through twice daily circles (meetings), and regular sociocratic decision-making processes. As MLC is committed to being child-centred and a self-directed learning space, consultation with the young people who make up our community is central to our work.We consult, informally, with parents and guardians during drop-off and pick-up times, and we regularly invite more formal feedback through diverse media (e.g. online feedback forms, informal tea gatherings, social gatherings outside of working hours). As often as possible, we reiterate our commitment to hearing and responding to the interests of all people impacted by our work, and invite the adults to communicate openly with the MLC facilitators.More broadly, MLC is in dialogue with other youth organisations based in Buckfastleigh and is working to contribute to and learn from our local allies and peers.

Directors' remuneration

For the 2022-2023 financial year, the total amount paid or receivable by directors in respect of qualifying services was £10,965.The directors received payments because they hold dual roles within Maverick Learning Community. The directors all also work in the CIC as facilitators/mentors. All payments received pertain to this facilitation work and associated planning/preparation meetings. There were no other transactions or arrangements in connection with the remuneration of directors, or compensation for director's loss of office, which require to be disclosed.
