In 2022-23, SRC CIC set out to connect with people across Norwich, the county of Norfolk, and the wider East Anglia region. We set a goal to interact with 6 different community groups and provide education to 100 people around diversity and inclusion topics. As a Nonprofit, we are committed to connecting with the local community, upskilling groups and organisations on the importance of representation and inclusivity in our local community. We offer training and consultancy on a variety of inclusion topics along with resources in state of a few sectors, good leadership practices, and coaching to improve workplace culture. By creating opportunities to engage the local community, we have educated 150+ local people across the year; run two workshops on anti-racism as an activist; run one panel talk in connection with Norfolk Women’s Marketing Network; and provided consultancy to 4 local businesses. We measure success of our interactions based in audience impact after a training session, collecting data from organisations in a year-to-year basis, and increased conversation locally around various inclusion topics. Because of the current landscape across Norwich, the county and the wider region, we often face challenges getting organisations engaged in the conversation. Based on our learnings, we are tackling route causes of lack of engagement by collecting individual data through surveys to our local community. Our goals for 2022-231. Engage with six local businesses, networks or organisations The incorporation of SRC as a Community Interest Company was a great opportunity for us to engage with the local social enterprise community, wider small business community, and the independent shop scene in Norwich. We aimed to engage with and create rapport with six different organisations across the city this year. 2. Educate 100 people across Norwich on Anti-Racism Good community change starts with knowledge sharing. We set an ambitious first year target of reaching at least 100 people across consultancy, community engagement, and local protest days. Our focus this year was on Anti-Racism in light of recent events locally and nationally across the UK. 3. Run two workshops for the activist community Education was a key component of our strategic ambitions this year. We wanted to run two workshops for the activist community around our focus of Anti-Racism as local activist groups were looking to become more intersectional and create a shared understanding of the historical issues and context around engaging those from the global majority. 4. Apply for 6 tendering opportunities to grow our work In order to grow our experience and profile, we aimed to apply for six tendering opportunities across the UK, staying as local as possible, this year. We achieved these goals by: Running a series of projects, like Anti-racism training for locally based activists, a workshop on understanding intersectionality for local organisations, surveying local businesses around diversity and inclusion topics, and speaking engagements. Outcomes:Workshops were attended by 20 local people; 200+ people engaged through a live stream on social media35 SMEs engaged with the survey; Reached out to Chamber of Commerce for supportI spoke at DisruptHR about intersectionality; I was a Panel Guest at ProspHER fest, where I spoke about doing business authentically. I Spoke at PUB Networking about how micro-enterprises are in a specifically unique position to be more inclusive and the value that brings to their customers as well as their organisation.
The CIC created a survey that 35 SMEs responded to in April 2023, and has created networking opportunities across some 15 networking groups across the 21 months we have been incorporated. This helped us understand what the local business community might need from the CIC and how we can help plug the gaps across the DEI landscape here in Norwich, Norfolk and East Anglia. Our research shows that Norwich in particular is a little further behind on DEI concepts and embedding those into local businesses more readily than other parts of the country (e.g., London, Birmingham). Conversations are still ongoing with the local business community and residents to understand more fully where we might be able to help further.
