Throughout the year at RAAY, some regular activities continued to take place, and as in previous years, there were opportunities to take part in various events and activities in the Stonehouse neighbourhood, working with community members and partners. However, personal health issues had a significant impact on plans to further develop RAAY and it’s involvement in the Stonehouse cultural scene, so the year’s activities are best described as having been undertaken in a holding pattern. The Monday Yoga-inspired breath awareness class continued throughout the year, as did 1-to-1 yoga sessions with a variety of clients. 1-to-1 sessions allow for more bespoke relationships between teacher and student than is possible in a class, and specific attention to a range of conditions can be given on an individual basis. Four philosophy sessions also continued through the year. Two sessions, PYTSS (Plymouth Yoga Teacher’s Support & Sharing), and PYPSS (Plymouth Yoga Practitioner’s Support & Sharing), are spaces for connection, networking, problem-solving, and either professional (PYTSS), or personal (PYPSS) development. The other two sessions are discussion workshops centred on Yoga Philosophy, using foundational texts as a starting point. Toward the end of the year, Director Nic Sharpe began to develop the idea of a Support & Sharing group for people suffering from hypermobility spectrum disorders, and connective tissue disorders such as Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. This development is a direct outcome of Nic’s having been diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and the impact it’s had on her professional & personal life. It’s hoped that the group will be up and running by the end of 2023. Director Matt Thomas continued to develop papermaking through Matt’s Paper Hog, and established regular weekly making and selling days at RAAY. People were encouraged to come to the studio on making days to participate in papermaking demos, and demos were provided at outdoor events such as the Union Street Party and Wonderzoo Pop-up in the Park. Participation in other events included the Manor Street Market, Print In Action festival at Ocean Studios in Royal Wm Yard and the Plot’s Christmas market. The Print in Action festival led to meetings with students and printmakers around Plymouth, and Alan Qualtrough, who runs the letterpress studio at Ocean Studios. It’s hoped that further collaboration with Alan will be developed throughout 2023 and into 2024. Organisations and artists who came to RAAY to work included the Wonderzoo Respect Festival Archive pilot exhibition, Portrait photography sessions with Thom Boulton and Crab & Bee’s performance of the Seance for Stonehouse – a performance art piece that combined ancient history and mythology with contemporary ideas & perceptions of the Stonehouse area.RAAY’s involvement with the Adelaide Street Angels community group again centred on monthly litter picks (working with Clean Our Patch), monthly meetings (held at Oasis), and garden activities, which were undertaken on an informal, but regular, weekly basis.The Angels planned and organised a medieval fun day to take place in Adelaide Park, which was to include dancing, combat demonstrations and storytelling provided by the Plymouth Medieval Society, as well as stalls and demos from RAAY (papermaking), The Flax Project, Jar Squad and The Scrapstore. Inclement weather caused the event to be cancelled, but the hope is that it will be rescheduled for 2024.
RAAY’s stakeholders fall into three groups: People in the Stonehouse area around RAAY who come to exhibi-tions, activities and classes; artists and teachers who work with us; and other organisations in the area with whom we partner for various community activities (organisations include Nudge Community Builders, Won-derzoo, Plymouth Play Association Scrapstore, Omnium Radio CIC, Jar Squad, The Village Hub The Flax Pro-ject). Throughout the year, stakeholders consultation was somewhat limited, due to limitations imposed on RAAY’s activities due to health concerns. However, there remains scope to introduce a neighbourhood Yoga class for Adelaide Street residents. The yoga support & sharing groups and philosophy sessions remain well attended. Teachers who attend the sessions have continued to find them useful, and have been able to take what’s discussed in the group out in to the wider yoga-teaching environment in Plymouth. Though the idea to develop a Hypermobility support & sharing group was based largely on personal experience, as of year-end 2023 there were no in-person support groups for Hypermobility/Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, and informal discus-sions with EDS sufferers and yoga teachers indicated that an in-person group would be a boost to the aware-ness of and support for these conditions. There has been continued interest in papermaking workshops, and while a program of workshops was not initiated in 2022-2023, this should be pursued for 2023-2024. Again, consultation has been informal, but indicates that workshops would be a popular addition to the papermaking project.With respect to RAAY’s involvement with the Adelaide Street Angels, the monthly meetings have been an on-going way to consult with the community in a direct way, and at times results of those consultations have di-rectly followed on from issues raised in the meetings. Flytipping is a regular concern, as well as anti-social behaviour, and the Angel’s relationship with St. Peter & The Waterfront ward councillors has led to actions be-ing taken to deal with these problems. The councillors have been able to act on behalf of the community in general, and in some cases with regards to needs of specific individuals. Through events like the medieval day (which was largely community-driven), the group continues to promote community pride and participation.
Director’s salary of £2,000 (Nic Sharpe - £1000, Matt Thomas £1000) was accrued.There were no other transactions or arrangements in connection with the remuneration of di-rectors, or compensation for director’s loss of office, which require to be disclosed.
