Ham United Group aims to improve the environment and quality of life in Ham and Petersham. This involves promoting diverse charitable purposes, events and projects for the benefit of the local community. In the year to 30 April 2023 our activities have included: Improving biodiversity through volunteer work sessions in the Library Garden. Tackling overgrown and difficult areas of the Wates Estate through Green Grafters, a weekly gardening group that brings volunteers together for a dose of nature therapy.Weekly gardening sessions (term time) with year 7 SEN students at the Grey Court Allotment. Promoting mental wellbeing through regular meditation group meetings.Providing facilities at MakerLabs for the community to meet and socialise, also providing tools, equipment and inspiration for individuals to repair or build items themselves. Friends of Ham Lands were awarded a grant of £7,170 from Richmond Council’s Local Area Fund for a project entitled ‘Nature on our Doorstep’. The project includes additional noticeboards on Ham Lands which will be procured by the Council with a contribution of £3,440 from the award, leaving a net grant of £3,750 from which the group has purchased sound recording equipment for a ‘listening to nature’ project and tools for their volunteer conservation work. The group improved biodiversity on Ham Lands through regular volunteer sessions throughout the year, often in collaboration with other voluntary organisations, and also engaged and informed residents about plants and wildlife through guided walks on the Ham Lands Local Nature Reserve. We supported the local Neighbourhood Forum and the Ham and Petersham Community magazine. We continued to respond to consultations on the Ham Close Development where the Little House is situated (home to MakerLabs and our official address).
HUG’s stakeholders are mainly residents of Ham, Petersham and North Kingston. HUG maintains a website (www.hamunitedgroup.org,uk), distributes a quarterly newsletter and meeting notices via an email contact list and maintains a Facebook page and Twitter account. We attend community fairs, engaging in dialogue with residents about our work and collecting contact details where residents wish to stay in touch.HUG has regular meetings of directors and all members of the community are free to attend these if they wish to suggest a new initiative. Meetings are held at times and locations agreed by attendees to be most convenient. Comments or suggestions submitted by email or other communication channels are responded to in a timely manner and/or raised at meetings.HUG membership is free of charge and open to any local person. HUG members vote on significant matters and elect the Group’s directors and officers. HUG aims to enable any member of the community to participate in the group, to develop projects to improve the area and to provide support to make these projects a reality, if they are supported by residents and make a positive contribution to the neighbourhood.
