Company activities and impact

Craft Forward runs free craft workshops with a social purpose. We are dedicated to disrupting the elitism within the arts and crafts world, redefining these activities as valuable tools for community growth and social change. Our flagship initiative, Blankets for London, exemplifies this commitment. Through intergenerational knitting and crochet workshops, we promote community engagement, mental health support and social cohesion. We've successfully organised multiple iterations of Blankets for London, expanding our reach beyond Lambeth to benefit wider London communities. We've hosted workshops in collaboration with various organisations, schools, and cultural institutions, fostering a diverse and engaged network. From April 2022 to March 2023 we have run one free knitting and crochet workshop a month from our headquarter in Brixton and 8 extra workshops from different areas in London. We have assembled 44 blankets to donate and have engaged over 1000 people with Blankets for London alone.

Consultation with stakeholders

The Craft Forward community comprises workshops participants of all ages and backgrounds who want to learn or practice a new skill, local residents living across London and wanting to nurture new relationships, skilled facilitators supporting larger groups of people to come together to weave change, dedicated volunteers who each year help distribute and assemble Blankets for London and collaborative institutions who host us. The project Blankets for London is deeply rooted within our community: with a firm commitment to actively involve and engage our community members. We maintain open channels of communication through regular interactions; encouraging community members to express their thoughts and ideas. This engagement occurs in person during workshops, as well as online through social media. Additionally, we conduct formal feedback sessions and focus groups involving participants and local residents. Our project, Blankets for London, plays a vital role in addressing the pressing need for community engagement, mental health support, and intergenerational unity, particularly in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. We have garnered extensive feedback from over 100 participants who willingly completed our formal feedback form (approximately 55% of participants complete this form in each workshop). Their feedback consistently highlights the significant positive impacts on their well-being; sense of community, and mental health. Notably, 60% of participants continue to return regularly to our workshops, indicating a growing interest in consistent community-building activities. The undeniable impact of the pandemic on our community is evident in the feedback, with 80% of participants reporting negative effects on their sense of community. Remarkably, over 100% of participants have expressed their eagerness to attend future sessions. The high demand for our workshops is unmistakable, as they consistently sell out within 40 minutes of being made available, with a substantial waiting list for future sessions. We prioritise open communication with our participants, actively listening to their preferences and suggestions, which can pertain to both the session's content and the project as a whole. Furthermore, as a commitment to empowerment and a circular economy, all our facilitators are former participants.
