COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT

RECREATION ROAD ALLOTMENTS CIC

Company Number: 14075650 (England and Wales)

Year Ending: 30 April 2023

Company activities and impact

The company runs Recreation Road Allotments, a private allotment community located in Selby, North Yorkshire. During the financial year, the company’s activities have benefited the community in the following ways:Provided arable land for cultivation to approximately 89 residents – servicing the surrounding communities of Selby, Barlby, Brayton & Osgodby.Provided land to Selby District AVS for community projects – so that participants may benefit from the improved mental and physical wellbeing that comes from gardening and spending time outside.Installed hedgehog boxes and set aside areas of bramble to protect wildlife so that everyone can enjoy the mental wellbeing benefits of being in nature.Organised competitions for the enjoyment of tenants – including a sunflower competition – and other events such as a seed swap day.

Consultation with stakeholders

The company’s external stakeholders are the tenants who farm the land. We invite feedback from anyone who becomes a tenant so that we can improve their experiences of being part of our community. All tenants can attend our monthly committee meetings should they wish, and our committee members regularly check in with tenants while on the allotments so that they keep abreast of the concerns of the community. This open-door policy to communication means that we react swiftly to resolve unforeseen issues that arise – such as damage to allotments from high winds (of which the allotments are prone) and prioritise aspects of allotment life that the tenants identify as being important to them – such as the preservation of wildlife. We enhance the tenants experience of being part of our community by anticipating and organising services to assist with their gardening needs – such as organising bark chip delivery, offering gardening advice and loaning gardening tools. Additionally, the committee notifies tenants of high interest activities that they may wish to participate in – such as the Barlby and Osgodby Horticultural Show.
