Thirdspace Theatre rebranded from Windmill Young Actors in 2023. TST run weekly drama workshops for over 240 young people across Brighton and Hove. Our 16 clubs operate in 8 locations and serve children and young people aged 6 - 25. Five of our clubs are completely free to attend and all our clubs offer free and concession rate prices. We continue to work with referrals from organisations such as Social Services, Youth Clubs and Charities. We have also developed relationships with young people from diverse backgrounds through workshops in Schools (Brighton Aldridge Community Academy, Varndean and Kings School Hove). In addition to our term-time classes, we run holiday courses for the Winter and Summer holidays. These have been very successful, and we have welcomed support from Brighton & Hove City Council through the Holiday Activities and Food Fund. This programme has helped us reach more children & Young People who otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford drama classes. During the 3 holiday courses run in partnership with HAF in the 2021-22 financial period, we were able to offer 50 young people free places, providing approximately 1,200 hours of free training. One third of our community are from low-income backgrounds and attend our clubs free of charge. Our free clubs run weekly in Whitehawk, Hollingdean, Tarner and Hangelton. These are all recognised as areas of deprivation. Commissions In September 2022 we were commissioned by Brighton Dome to create work in response to their Heritage and History Archive. Our 16- 25 created site- specific work around the historic building for their Heritage Open Day. This also served as a learning experience for young people about their local history. The company was paid by Brighton Dome to deliver this commission. Leonardslee IlluminatedOur 16- 25 year-olds received paid work performing outdoors in November and December 2022. They performed to audiences nightly as characters on a Forest Night Trail. The company was paid by Leonardslee Illuminated to deliver this commission. Brighton Dome and Festival Bakkhai was our largest and most ambitious show to date with a team of over 100 participants and professional staff taking part. After auditions in schools and at Brighton Youth Centre a diverse company of 50 young people age 12- 23 were selected to form the core company. This company created the show and a team of young writers age 19- 24 wrote the scipt based on the creative offerings of the whole company. The company met three times a week from February through to May to rehearse. We also Collaborated with Ceyda Tanc Dance and Brigton People’s Theatre bringing the performing company to 80 people. The show sold out quickly to rave reviews and considered a highlight of the Festival. From this creative journey two new weekly clubs were formed. The company class which is our only club with a wide age range and our writing club which is led by the lead young writer of Bakkhai. Performances The year included our Christmas Showcase at The Windmill Theatre in December 2022 in which every group performed over two performances. In June 2023 The Crucible was performed in The Spire Church by a company of 12- 16 year olds/ On the same day two other companies of the same age group performed ‘The Dark of The Moon’. In July 2023 Critical Mass was performed at Brighton Open Air Theatre with all of our younger clubs age 6- 12yrs taking part. Mentoring TST have begun to formalise our mentoring programme offering ‘in kind’ and paid work opportunities to young people as well as assistance with preparations for further and higher education. Our eldest group are offered to attend training free of charge in exchange for work experience opportunities which have the capacity to lead to paid work. We have four young people who work regularly for us in a paid capacity and we offer them mentoring, support and training in their work with us. Paid Work for Young PeopleIn the 22- 23 period we offered over 19 young people paid work and mentoring. We have also assisted some young people into having representation as actors and this has led to paid work for them. Funding In order to deliver our programme we have successfully received funding from The National Lottery Awards For All. The Arts Society. Sussex Community Fund. Unlimited. East Brighton Trust, Brighton and Hove Council together with HAF funding.
Our key stakeholders are our young actors and their families. They are consulted on an ongoing basis through informal means such as face to face meetings and emails during the term. We also ask for termly and yearly feedback through online surveys, to ensure we gather their feedback and suggestions.Following the 2023 Brighton Festival Performances of Bakkhai, we held a feedback session for the entire company. More than 50 people attended. The information gathered from them has been directly fed into our organisational strategy and plans for future performances. Our teaching staff are invited to regular staff meetings in person and on zoom, as well as annual training & sharing sessions. The Artistic Director and Company Manager are in weekly contact with teaching staff during term time, and they choose the work they want to make within their clubs. The Directors of Thirdspace Theatre CIC are actively involved in the management of the organisation, including offering support with recruitment and creative engagement. We work closely with our venue partners to ensure all our clubs are safe, secure and provide the best training opportunities possible. We proactively work with venues, particularly community spaces and schools, to help us reach members of their community who might not be aware of our offer.
