This year had a busy programme of activities. Benched is the ongoinging monthly practice, in which a Larkers artist takes a sitting bench to a public location and gives space to listening and engaging with people in the community. This practice also is a source of material/content for “Benched”, participatory theatre showcasing stories and events from the lives of people in the community.Larkers continued to provide hosting and greeting services under its continuing contract with Duckie’s monthly performance evening at the Royal Vauxhall Tavern London. The hosting role provides rich and valued continuing contact across the generations of Larkers’ community especially older queers / tranwomen who are at risk of social isolation. Both “Benched” and the Duckie hosting offer “radical attention” to Larkers’ community, a simple yet rich quality of human presence in the moment which for many isolated and marginalised people is one of the most valued experiences. The grant money received in 2022 was spent to deliver workshops as part of Cambridge Junction’s “Red Balloon Project”, an outreach programme for children many of whom are trans, disabled or neurodivergent who self-exclude from school for mental health reasons.Cambridge Junction also sourced funding from the Pilgrim Project and commissioned Larkers to work with young people in psychiatric hospitals both by themselves + in their family on a stop-motion film project about their lives and experiences.Larkers provided an artist in Impact Driver, a participatory performance piece in which professionals collaborate with non-professionals, teasing out intergenerational themes around labour and class, trust and friendship. Two of Larkers’ artists were accepted onto a selective specialised playwriting course with Royal Court Writing Group to upskill their theatre development work. During the course they developed the “Gen X-Gen Z Project”, about parent-child relationships from the perspective of a child raised by trans parent, and each generation’s weaknesses and strengths. In 2023-24 this play has been shortlisted by Unlimited (“we back disabled artists”) for making application for £25,000 funding to develop the play.
Through Artsadmin the Larkers Director had a startup meeting with a “critical friend” (another producer in the community) who led a structured examination of all crew’s motivations for being part of this specific type of work.Because they are participatory, both Benched as practice and as performance, and the Duckie hosting service are inherently a highly contextual mixture of delivery and feedback from participants.Feedback as a mix of verbal and structured is always obtained from all stakeholders in a project or performance. This includes funders, crew and participants. The Larkers Director started a collaboration with two other performers to write a trans safety policy to protect artists, crew, participants. This vital project is intended to develop resources and actionable techniques and is not yet complete.Larkers artists now work with access workers to make programs and performances maximally accessible, such as audio/text descriptions, BSL interpretation, and a touch tour prior to the show. Larkers also worked with professional mentors under the DYCP programme to ensure work lands with target groups. There were several meetings with funders and administrators during the year to ensure alignment with funding goals and legal compliance. These often included a younger Larkers artist to coach them in finding their voice in these more formal contexts.
Reimbursement for use of private motor vehicle £2039 and use of home £250.
