Company activities and impact

We completed a programme funded by Tower Hamlets Council in December 2022. 34 carers took part in four workshops and 1-2-1 coaching. Participants told us that they could see improvement to their mental and emotional health and their ability to sustain their caring role and that they felt better understood and more capable of supporting themselves. Carers Support West Sussex asked us to train staff in using coaching approaches to introduce more effective ways of working with their service users. Between April and October 2022, we delivered 19 workshops to around 75 client-facing staff who told us that they felt better equipped for their work, and excited about the benefits for empowering carers. We also delivered 103 1:1 coaching sessions to 21 carers who all made good progress towards their goals. An external evaluation by Kent University was overwhelmingly positive about the positive impact of coaching on carers lives and wellbeing. Nottingham University’s Carers Network asked us to run workshops and coaching for working carers. We delivered 4 workshops to around 40 participants, who told us that they felt better equipped to face the challenges they face at home and/or at work. We delivered 36 coaching sessions to 15 people who told us they achieved their goal or made good progress.Other work during this period included A workshop for working carers at Liverpool Football Club to mark the launch of their Carers Strategy and work with individual carers who are able to self-fund

Consultation with stakeholders

Our primary stakeholders are unpaid carers and this year we have also had a big focus on staff whose job involves supporting carers. We continue to seek regular feedback from all workshop and coaching clients we have worked with during the year about their experience of working with us and ask about any changes they would like to see, additional support they might need, or topics for future workshops. This feedback is used to inform the content and the design of current and future programmes. In West Sussex for example we piloted our workshops and then made changes based on feedback from participants before rolling the programme out more widely. We also continue to carry out evaluation in respect of our 1:1 coaching to help us understand how/in what circumstances and why our work benefits carers and to contribute to the business case for seeking funding or contracts for new work.We worked closely with Carers Centres in Tower Hamlets and West Sussex to co-design the programmes for their service users, to make sure that the work aligns with their objectives and priorities, as well as to try and identify and apply for additional funding opportunities. Through our work with Liverpool Football Club and Nottingham University, as well as Carers Support West Sussex who employ many carers as staff, we started to develop more in-depth relationships with employers of carers. By consulting them on the format and content of our work with their employees as well as the outcomes they are hoping to see from our work we are building up a clearer picture of how best to support working carers. Whenever we complete a programme whether this is commissioned or funded by a grant, we produce an end-of-programme report where we offer an overview of the feedback and evaluation results for the programme together with any additional reflections from ourselves and use this as an opportunity to seek further feedback to inform future work with them or with new clients. Through our involvement in the Coaching for Social Impact network, we are able to access opportunities to learn from other coaches from different backgrounds who are working in this field. One of our main areas of exploration in the group this year has been around Accessibility and Inclusion and we will be using this learning in the coming year to consider how to expand our reach and accessibility by trying to involve coaches with different backgrounds, lived experiences and language skills. To this end, we have started to build relationships with potential associate coaches and have started working with one coach who brings experience of working with children and young people. Whilst we continue to gather very rich feedback from our stakeholders about the work we deliver, we have struggled to make our Carers Reference Group a meaningful form of engagement to inform the development of the company. We have recently sought advice on how to improve this aspect of our engagement with our unpaid carer stakeholders as well as others. In the coming year we will be trying some different approaches including issuing regular newsletters or bulletins about our work and challenges together with requests for feedback and comments.
