Company activities and impact

The company carries out legal and business support activities in the East Midlands area for individuals, SME’s, charities and other CICs within the local community. These services include McKenzie Friend litigation support in Family and County Court, advocacy for the homeless, support with benefit applications and appeals as well as business support. The work is carried out by a representative with appropriate professional experience and qualification but is of an unreserved nature as it is not overseen by any regulatory body, to the extent that it is allowed by the law and regulation governing the type of support provided. This allows the work to be carried out in ways that involve the service users in an empowered manner that is tailored more to their wants, needs and requirements as well as being charged at an affordable price, which may be reduced or offered on a pro bono basis when appropriate. In the financial year 2022-23, as individuals and businesses were recovering from and dealing with the effects of the pandemic, the company’s legal activities were non-reserved and have specifically benefitted the community in the following ways:- on a pro bono basis local residents have had: benefits applications completed and decisions appealed/ reconsidered; applications made with local authorities for homelessness provision and support in bidding on properties; applications made for funding for and provision of goods and furnishings to move into new accommodation; drafting of documents for and communications facilitation within legal proceedings; communications facilitation with social services and with other regulatory bodies; conflict resolution in family and neighbour disputes.- on a “pay what it’s worth to you” basis, individuals, CICs and SMEs have had two hours of initial advice and support on a spectrum of social, legal and regulatory matters, on the basis they are free to pay any amount up to the basic fee for those 2 hours (similar to legal aid rate), or none at all, with no questions asked.- on a pro bono and low cost basis local CICs have been formed and/ or have had: governance and other regulatory documents, licences and contracts prepared; funding bids submitted; Policies and Procedures prepared; safeguarding issues managed; intellectual property support; litigation support in county court and in employment matters.- on a low cost basis small local SMEs have been formed and/ or have had: governance and other regulatory documents, licences and contracts prepared; Policies and Procedures prepared; safeguarding issues managed; intellectual property support; litigation support given in county court and in employment matters.Low cost work is carried out at a rate similar to legal aid rates and may be further discounted, depending on the resources available to the SME/ CIC. The amount of work to be carried out is assessed and agreed on a fixed fee basis, with blocks of work carried out so that the client always knows the cost of each piece of work done and what the end goal is in carrying out that work. The number of hours worked on chargeable low cost support given to SMEs and CICs is matched by the pro bono work provided by company to individuals and SMEs/ CICs that cannot afford to pay.Offering professional support in this way also allows the professional involved more freedom in how they provide the service to take into account their own personal responsibilities and needs.

Consultation with stakeholders

In these early days of the service provision, whilst there is just one professional involved in providing the non-reserved legal activities, the service users have been invited to feed back on the way that the service is provided in order to form the best offering to suit them financially, the breadth of support provided and the way in which it is provided. This feedback has been given in writing and through discussion, both on Teams/ Zoom and in-person and has been invaluable in forming the offering as it is envisaged it will be expanded to involve a larger number of professional service providers, in order to ensure consistency and transparency.

Directors' remuneration

The total amount receivable by the director in respect of qualifying chargeable services was £8425.There were no other transactions or arrangements in connection with the remuneration of directors, or compensation for director’s loss of office, which require to be disclosed.
