Company activities and impact

The mission of WACIT is to improve the mental health and wellbeing of children and young people who experience adversity and trauma, especially in low- and middle-income countries. This is achieved through training of professionals, community volunteers and caregivers; involvement of young people as peer educators or support workers; and evaluation of impact through research. In the last financial year, we completed or initiated the following projects:Train-of-Trainer (cascade) of improving child mental health provision in disadvantaged communities of South Africa and Pakistan. These professionals then provided various interventions, which were evaluated(completed):https://doi.org/10.1016/j.childyouth.2024.107482 https://doi.org/10.1108/JICA-08-2023-0068 Training of young people as peer educators in the same two countries. They then provided youth mental health awareness events in their communities, including evaluation (completed): https://doi.org/10.1093/heapro/daae010National Train-of-Trainer programme for all professionals and caregivers supporting unaccompanied refugee children across Greece, and evaluation (ongoing):https://doi.org/10.1177/13591045241242324Trauma-informed training for psychologists in Ukraine, during the war conflict (ongoing). Training of professionals and peer educators (young mothers) in Kenya to support pregnant teenagers and young mothers (recently started). As demonstrated by the evaluation, impact was achieved at different levels, i.e. direct benefits for children and young people through improved care, enhanced knowledge and skills for a large group of professionals and caregivers, policy guidelines, and evidence-base to apply this model to other countries and contexts of disadvantage. Please see links for published evaluation articles.
