Spilt Milk produced several exhibitions for our artist membership to disseminate their artworks to our audiences in Edinburgh, Fife and the Lothians. These exhibitions included:Cartography of Care 8th – 29th October 2022. Cartography of Care was an exhibition curated in response to the idea of an emotional atlas. It brought together the work of an international group of artist mothers working across a variety of disciplines to explore how we might map the human experience of caregiving. The exhibition was accompanied by a series of community focused events including a family friendly afternoon opening event, and several free drop-in creative workshops for local mothers and their families. In Unison 6th March – 16th April 2023This exhibition was produced in partnership with On Fife to present the work of Scottish based artist mothers for their International Women’s Day Programme. The exhibition was held at Dunfermline Carnegie Library & Museum. Formula for Care? 27th March – 6th August 2023This exhibition was in partnership with Tonic Arts, NHS Lothian Charity. The exhibition included the work of 9 Spilt Milk members whose work portrayed the complex and diverse experiences of mothering. The exhibition took place at St John’s Hospital in Livingston and expanded our audience reach to engage with NHS staff, patients and visitors within the Maternity unit at the hospital. Cut, Torn & Mended 13th May – 14 July 2023This online exhibition and accompanying Zine provided an accessible opportunity for our members to have their work shown in our online exhibition (thus reducing shipping costs) and provided an exciting and accessible format to present works in collage from our members in celebration of World Collage Day 2023. We also held a number of workshops throughout the period of September 2022 – August 2023 including an online book group ‘The Artists Way’ which encouraged creative mothers to reawaken their creativity and come together in a supportive online space once a week with Beckie Upton. The group met for 12 weeks online. The fees were charged at a sliding scale price to support those on lower incomes attend.
Spilt Milk Gallery’s Stakeholders include our Artist Members, Exhibition Audiences (in person and online), Workshop users (in-person and online), Parterships (Tonic Arts, NHS Lothian Charity, and On Fife). Consultation with stakeholders included several online meetings with our artist members to evaluate their needs in terms of exhibitions and events to showcase their artworks, this included gathering feedback from exhibitors and artists who were included in online events. We also produced printed feedback forms during the exhibition ‘Cartography of Care’ to evaluate visitor experiences and feedback from those who attended our drop in workshops. Online feedback was gathered from participants who attended the Artists Way Book Group and this was used to improve the future programming. Several meetings were also held with our partnership projects with On Fife and Tonic Arts including consultation with Tonic Arts prior to and during the exhibition ‘Formula for Care’ to ensure that the Spilt Milk aims were being met as well as Tonic Arts during our partnership. Consultation was also conducted with the artists in the exhibition to ensure they were satisfied with how their work was presented and that written texts accurately reflected their ideas.
