Company activities and impact

United Support Group CIC delivered a mix of projects in the reporting period. In October 2022 we secured a small award to run some group sessions at our new location in Walsall. These were aimed at children and young people with neurodevelopmental conditions to encourage family engagement in a community setting after school. We supported over 30 families totalling 77 individuals throughout the project. We gathered some feedback below:We asked participants how they felt and what they liked about their session.“I just like playing with this”. H aged 7 told us this when he was playing with the magnetics. His mum A told us “Finding new and different toys that H enjoys playing with, coming and playing and interacting with other children”. H feels happy coming here. She told us she would like to have more activities especially in the holidays. She said “In soft play, I am sitting on my own where H will just go off on his own. This gives us a chance to play together, feels nice to come and interact in play activities.L aged 9 told us “I like the Lego best and beating Ann at pairs game”. Her mum L told us “I enjoyed the clay best; I liked the messy texture of the clay”. Would love to do activities like this again, it is nice that we are interacting with the children. It is planned out nicely and I like the different sectioned areas. Dad Oliver told us “it is nice seeing other families and children like my own and I like that it has more space that at the other venue”.J, mum to P aged 4 said “I enjoyed coming and relaxing whilst the children have been playing”R aged 12 said “I have liked everything, the games, meeting new people, Lego, clay, drawing. These are different to what I normally do. I would like to do more of these sessions. Mum P said “R feels happier to be himself and I know I am not on my own. There are children and families in the same situation as us. R is eager to love and enjoys getting involved in all the activities. It has had an impact on my mental health. I don’t feel so isolated. I felt like it was my fault that R was like he is, now I know it’s not because of me”.In May of 2023, we secured funding to deliver a year-long project to support children, young people and adults with neurodevelopmental conditions in the West Midlands. We supported 32 families totalling 91 individuals on the project throughout the reporting period. The project worked to support participants of all ages to understand their condition through therapeutic play activities. We also provided advocacy support and help with Education, Health and Care Plans, and applications for benefits including Personal Independence Payments and Disability Living Allowance. Here are a few examples of feedback in the comments book in the setting.“So grateful for a place of safety and understanding for a hard, long and lonely journey through autism and ADHD diagnosis for two children”.Parent/Carer“I love coming in, it is the highlight of my month”.Parent/Carer“I like making slime, I love coming”.9 year old sibling“I enjoyed my session with Ann, she helped me with a PIP form and I got a drink as well”Adult Participant“Ann, Lisa and team are empathetic and helpful with my situation, thankful for this along with my parents”.Adult Participant“Amazing service, people amazing. Debbie was very aware and understanding of needs, and overall helpful information. We secured a small amount of Funds from the Asda Foundation for a sensory space in our setting. The children enjoy using the space to relax and express their emotions through play. All our projects in the West Midlands have benefited individuals with neurodevelopmental conditions and their families both undiagnosed and diagnosed conditions. We work in collaboration with other local organisations including universal services and third sector to offer holistic support to our community.

Consultation with stakeholders

We work with other organisations in Walsall and across Birmingham in the West Midlands. We have developed working relationships with service providers to offer a holistic service. In Walsall and Birmingham, we work collaboratively with several services including early help and GP practices. We are developing new relationships with the Department for Work and Pensions including job centres across Walsall and Birmingham Our collaborative approach includes a two-way referral process to ensure all participants are working with the most needed or relevant service and are working together to ensure needs are being met. We have worked with many schools in the locality as well as local authorities’ mental health workers and SEND Departments including the CAMHS and paediatric services in Walsall. We have carried out a variety of consultations with our current participants. This includes face-to-face meetings either one-to-one or group settings and paper and online surveys. The feedback collected tells us that the current project is valued and needed by those using the service. The support offered on the current project has collected feedback based on a variety of activities including group sessions, and one-to-one meetings. We have created our project based on the challenges and needs we have seen in the community we are working in. We have used some examples of the feedback collected in the report in our company activities section in this report.
