Company activities and impact

The latter half of 2022 was a very successful period for the company, as we worked to gain more presence and recognition, formalise the company structure, stage our first productions, and develop new shows. In short, this year was our true launch, transitioning from working behind the scenes to sharing our work with audiences. We initially staged a production of Girls Like That in Bangor, a production based on the true story of a canadian teen whose naked photos were leaked, leading to her untimely suicide. Moving into 2023 we began the development of our new production Dinner with Gatsby. This was a new musical about Domestic Violence, Toxic Masculinity, Homophobia, and Misogony. After compiling a new cast and with several months of workshops we were able to put on a smaller staging of this in a local Bangor venue in front of friends and family. Whilst the Bangor showing was a success and plans for the production were underway for our Lichfield premiere of 2 productions plus local schools workshops, the company was battling with challenges of cast burnout and sickness. After a long discussion as a team, we came to the heart-breaking decision that Dinner with Gatsby would not be going ahead at the current time. The show is now receiving it's premiere in May 2024In June 2023 RicNic and Work In Progress Theatre collaborated to premiere new musical Where The Bees Fly with a cast of local young people from Walsall, accompanied by a range of community art days, schools workshops, and a Young Producers programme. With a cast, crew, and band of 15 local young people aged 16-22 and a creative team of aspiring industry professionals all aged 25 and under, this production was highly successful with significant personal development taking place for all of the participants. This was surrounded by a wider programme of community activity which saw Work In Progress Theatre and RicNic engage with 1,003 community participants, deliver 166+ hours of training to children & young people, work with 25+ volunteers, 8 community partners, & in collaboration with our young producers deliver 4 community art events, & a community art exhibition.
