B3 - Bumps, Birth and Belonging CIC has had a significant impact on the mental and emotional well-being of women and families of African and Caribbean heritage in Thurrock, Essex. Through our peer support programmes, antenatal education, and counselling services, B3 has provided vital support to women in the perinatal period, helping them feel more empowered and better equipped to cope with the challenges of pregnancy and motherhood. In total, 27 women have attended B3's peer support programme, with an average of 8-10 women attending each session. B3 has also provided 1:1 support to six pregnant women, resulting in positive birth experiences and a feeling of empowerment to make decisions that were right for their families. Two women have accessed free counselling services with improved GAD and PHQ-9 scores at the end and two more women are currently in the process of receiving talking therapy, which is a testament to the effectiveness of B3's support. In addition to providing essential support services, B3 has also engaged with the local community through two successful events. The Christmas party held in Tilbury (a borough in the 10% most deprived in England) raised awareness of the organisation, provided informal support to mothers, engaged with fathers, and highlighted the support available within the family hubs. Similarly, the B3 Be Well day held in Purfleet on March 9th saw 22 parents and 13 children attend and gain increased awareness of menstrual and emotional health/well-being. The day also included valuable workshops from black female specialists, that provided strategies to support emotional, physical and spiritual wellbeing, which will benefit these parents and children in the long term. These engagement days were held in a safe space which enabled the beneficiaries to be interactive, and relaxed and express themselves freely amongst like-minded individuals, who are in similar positions.Overall, B3 - Bumps, Birth and Belonging CIC has made a great contribution to addressing the health inequalities and improving outcomes for African and Caribbean heritage families in Thurrock, Essex. Our culturally competent and relevant work has had a positive impact on the community thus far, with women and families reporting increased feelings of support, reduced isolation, and greater empowerment to make decisions that improve their wellbeing and quality of life.
B3’s stakeholders are the community we serve which are women and parents of African and Caribbean heritage. These families are currently in Thurrock Essex - The managing director lives has lived in Thurrock for a number of years and consults with parents who come through the hub at each group, via phone calls and the company website. They also consulted with the community stakeholders via a survey and at the engagement events. The research revealed a need for more regular groups – hence the move from once per month to twice and monthly walks. However, the ideal would be weekly groups which will aim to accommodate in the future (46% of respondents). The beneficiaries have also raised the issue that the groups are on weekdays and therefore working parents are unable to reap the benefits. This is also In our 12-month plan to have group peer support virtually or on a Saturday to address this issue. The research also identified that transport/distance and money is an issue for attending groups (30%).We keep the survey open and post the link monthly on social media in addition to making new participants aware of it when the get in contact with us. This will encourage more people to have their say and also have feedback forms after events.
