SENDCode have had a transitional year with growth in its education programme alongside commissioned work in content creation and employing several young people as freelancers who graduated from DISC last year. The Education strand was delivered alongside Digital Advantage as partners in the foundation of the Digital Independent Specialist College (DISC). The six learners from Manchester City Council all had positive destinations at the end of the programmes, with two moving to other places of learning to continue their studies. This was in itself a great achievement as they both entered mainstream education for the first time in many years. During the summer of 2023 SENDCode and Digital Advantage agreed Heads of Terms for a streamlining of operations to allow DISC to develop more effectively and thus impact on a wider group of young people with SEND. The Heads of Terms required SENDCode to ‘gift’ the contracts for their education delivery (now called the pre-internship) whilst DA ‘gifted’ SENDCode with content creation contracts. Education staff were Tuped over to DA whilst the agency staff including the Studio Manager, Two Content Creators and a Website Designer remained employees of SENDCode. The Founder, whilst an employee of DA since September 2023 works on a pro-bono basis for SENDCode along with DA’s Director of Training for 40% of their time, to ensure SENDCode is able to grow as a formal Digital Agency.SENDCode invested a significant amount of its reserves into renovating the third floor at Holyoake House to become the new base for DISC and the Agency. As a result, a nominal rent is now charged to SENDCode. Much of the equipment owned by SENDCode is still co-used by DISC and the Agency. The Agency has succeeded in growing despite little or no marketing, rather by word of mouth and was commissioned to employ a young person with SEND as a content creator on behalf of Manchester City Council from 1st September 2023. In addition, the agency has been commissioned to build a website on behalf of Manchester University Foundation Trust and National Autistic Society which will be a central repository for Greater Manchester’s autistic community. To do this we have employed the services of four ND freelancers, and also two of our own ND employees.Various other smaller scale projects have been commissioned including video, animation and website design, which have again provided work directly for the ND employees and freelancers we work with.SENDCode is now a key player in SEND conversations in Greater Manchester and has a story of success as a place of hope and aspiration for young people with SEND to find a supported route into employment, whilst still being directly involved in their education through close working with DISC and the provision of work experience opportunities for those who are ready.
The stakeholders of SENDCode include: The young people we work with directly and with whom we consult regularly. High-lighted through the involvement in our website design.Through attendance at Annual Reviews for our learners.Parents/ carers and advocates of our young people also provide us with their views on what is required to support young people directly.Board of Directors who meet regularly to discuss the direction of the company in terms of staffing, finance and potential programmes/ funding.Greater Manchester SEND and Work and Skills Local Authority teams, who discuss regularly with us the needs of young people under their jurisdiction.Department for Work and Pensions teams who refer to us and have consulted on the suitability of our offer to their clients.Clients who commission the agency to produce digital content.
