Western Wildcats Hockey Club (Registered number: SC314208)

Report of the Trustees
for the Year Ended 31 July 2023

The trustees who are also directors of the charity for the purposes of the Companies Act 2006, present their report with the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 31 July 2023. The trustees have adopted the provisions of Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019).

OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES
The main objectives of the club are the provision of facilities, coaching and organisation to promote the playing of hockey in the Milngavie and Bearsden area. Both our men's and women's first teams compete in the Premiership. The women are a regular top 4 in Scotland as are the men. The men are currently Indoor Champions, and have been promoted in the Euro's, Outdoor champions, and Scottish Cup holders. We aim to maintain this level of success through the enhancement of our junior programme, clearly identifiable player pathways, investment in coaching and the continuing development of a supportive club ethos.

We are striving to seek further investment in our programmes via funding and sponsorship.

ACHIEVEMENT AND PERFORMANCE
In Season 2022 - 2023 our Men have retained the indoor final, finished second in the league, making the play offs and reached the cup final.

Our women have reached the play - offs indoor and outdoor, and reached the cup semi-final.

Furthermore, thanks to the support of volunteers, we fielded a fourth women's team at district level; a first for our club.

In season 2022 - 2023 our men's 2nd team re-enforced their position in National League Division 2, they highest they can go, following restructuring post COVID.

In season 2023-2024 our men retained the indoor title, finished 3rd in the league and went on to win the National Championship play-off, taking top spot in European ranking once again.

In the EHL, they achieved Scotland's first win at the top table.

Our women have retained top four ranking indoor and outdoor and have reached the Scottish Cup final for the first time.

Our M2's had a difficult season, finishing too close to the relegation zone in Regional 1, while our L2's missed out on a play off spot for promotion to Championship by 2 points.

In the district, the M3 were outstanding, winning the league and the District Cup and reaching the semi-final of the Reserve Cup.

M4 achieved promotion, finishing second in Division 2, while the M5 finished 2nd in Division 4.

Our L3 team finished 4th despite being a very young team and having players move up or away.

Up and coming player, Chloe Hardie, won the player of the season award for this league.

Our L4 team finished 5th this year, amassing 29 points! An incredible turn around.

Huge thanks to all the volunteers during the week and at the weekend who support all these teams.

FINANCIAL REVIEW
Result for the year
The result for the year to 31 July 2023 is a deficit of £9,358 (2022: deficit £39,679). This result is stated after a depreciation charge of £4,512 (2022: £33,162) on the hockey pitch. The trustees are satisfied with the result for the year.

Reserves policy
The trustees have reviewed the reserves of the charity and are satisfied that reserves are adequate. The trustees longer term strategy is to ensure that the Club builds up sufficient reserves to replace the hockey pitch when it becomes necessary.

FUTURE PLANS
We will look to re-build the social aspect of our club to bring in some funds and try to attract more adult members.

We have started an adults into hockey initiative through Kate Holmes, with the hope of increasing adult
membership.

We will continue to build our junior membership where possible through regular coaching sessions and attending primary schools through our local active schools coordinator.

STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT
Governing document
The charity is controlled by its governing document and constitutes a company, limited by guarantee, as defined by the Companies Act 2006.

Recruitment and appointment of new trustees
The trustees form a Committee of Members from the Club. New trustees are voted onto the Committee by members at the AGM. All new trustees are selected with a view to ensuring that the Committee has an appropriate balance of relevant skills and experience.

Principal Risks and Uncertainties
The trustees review risks throughout the Club year and have assessed the major risks facing the Club. The trustees are satisfied that these risks are currently being adequately managed.

Independent Examiner's Report to the Trustees of
Western Wildcats Hockey Club

I report on the accounts for the year ended 31 July 2023 set out on pages five to eleven.

Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner
The charity's trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the terms of the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005 and the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006 (as amended). The charity's trustees consider that the audit requirement of Regulation 10(1)(a) to (c) of the Accounts Regulations does not apply. It is my responsibility to examine the accounts as required under Section 44(1)(c) of the Act and to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.

Basis of the independent examiner's report
My examination was carried out in accordance with Regulation 11 of the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently I do not express an audit opinion on the view given by the accounts.

Independent examiner's statement
In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention :

(1) which gives me reasonable cause to believe that, in any material respect, the requirements

- to keep accounting records in accordance with Section 44(1)(a) of the 2005 Act and Regulation 4 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations; and
- to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and to comply with Regulation 8 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations

have not been met; or

(2) to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention.

The trustees have reviewed the charity's operating costs for the next twelve months, and the sources of funds available, and are satisfied that the charity is a going concern.

Income
Income is recognised in the Statement of Financial Activities once the charity has entitlement to the funds, it is probable that the income will be received and the amount can be measured reliably. Membership income is recognised in the relevant Club membership year.

Expenditure
Liabilities are recognised as expenditure as soon as there is a legal or constructive obligation committing the charity to that expenditure, it is probable that a transfer of economic benefits will be required in settlement and the amount of the obligation can be measured reliably. Expenditure is accounted for on an accruals basis and has been classified under headings that aggregate all cost related to the category. Where costs cannot be directly attributed to particular headings they have been allocated to activities on a basis consistent with the use of resources.

Tangible fixed assets
Depreciation is provided at the following annual rates in order to write off each asset over its estimated useful life.

Property improvements - 10% on cost
Computer equipment - 25% on reducing balance

Small items of capital expenditure are treated as revenue expenditure when purchased. Single items costing less than £500 would not normally be capitalised.

Restricted funds can only be used for particular restricted purposes within the objects of the charity. Restrictions arise when specified by the donor or when funds are raised for particular restricted purposes.
