Throughout the first year, we have held two events that have directly benefited the Acton (W3) community. Our first event was organised during the October 2022 half term week with the aim of providing a free breakfast provision to the community to provide support during the cost-of-living crisis. We collaborated with Acton Gardens Community Centre to host this 4-day event so that we could provide the community with a safe space to socialise with other residents in a comforta-ble family setting. The Acton Gardens Community Centre provided the food for the event and W3 Are Community CIC planned and hosted the event. A total of 64 adults and children (23 low-income families) were welcomed to have a free healthy breakfast over four days whilst children were on half term from school. Families came together, socialised, children played with toys, read books provided, engaged in colouring activities and played together. The event was received very well. In November we began our second event called ‘W3 Gift Hamper Project’. This was a season-al festive event that was planned to gift families and single women fleeing domestic violence, residing within domestic violence shelters in the borough of Ealing, each with a festive food hamper plus a bag each of gifts for the single women, mothers and their children. The chil-dren’s ages ranged from 6 months to 14 years of age. We also donated toiletries to the shel-ters. We donated to two shelters, Housing for Women and Hestia. Both centres are local to the area.We applied for and was awarded a small grant of £500 from the Fresh Water Foundation to purchase gifts as well as the hampers and materials required to wrap presents. We also re-ceived £215 in cash donations from the local community. The total of £695.67 was utilised to purchase items to gift the hampers. To engage the community, as so many requested to actively get involved, we organised a community wrapping project at the ActOne boutique Cinema in Acton. The event was advertised on Eventbrite and many turned up to help wrap the gifts and arrange the food hampers. It was a lovely evening with amazing community spirit. We also held an ActOne cinema ticket (x2) raffle for those who had donated, and the winner was announced at the wrapping event. The project was a huge success, and the hampers were delivered to two refuges in Ealing to be distributed at their Christmas parties. The refuge centres receive funding to arrange Christmas parties however they have not had funding for gifts in many years. We realised that our community projects were something that was very much welcomed by the local community. Especially after the pandemic, we created a place for people to come together to do something good for others. We hope to do more of this in the future.
We have head meeting with the stakeholders in regards to the free breakfast club project were the parents and volunteers who helped run the project. A scannable QR code was printed and left on tables which gave families and staff access to an online form for feedback. Doing this has helped us understand the needs of the local Acton residents and what we can do to meet them. We understood that more families are in need of support during the school holidays with regards to the additional pressures of feeding their children.
