In our first year, we have focused on building two main income streams. Our main income has come from working with two specialist schools- Croft Community School and The Oaks Secondary School, which are part of The North & Southwest Durham Learning Federation. We offer educational opportunities for a selection of neurodiverse pupils who experience school-based anxiety – many of whom have been out of education for several years. This combines academic sessions, arts and crafts, outdoor education and games to develop social skills and build relationships with peers. These sessions run three days a week. Our second income stream has been to run school holiday activity sessions for young people with additional needs. These are funded by Durham County Council’s Fun and Food scheme. We design the sessions to work for a range of young people who have high levels of need and as such offer a niche service. These sessions have a high staff ratio, they offer low-demand activities with a range of outdoor learning opportunities, craft activities and sensory activities. We also provide a meal and a fireside snack. These paid opportunities have allowed us to offer free vocational opportunities for autistic students from Thornbeck College who come to the site each week and complete jobs in the woodland. Over the past few months, they have created a fantastic dead hedge, a sensory path and several other jobs.Alongside this, we have delivered several one-off sessions for groups such as Investing in Children and Children Northeast.
We have had no specific consultations with our stakeholders but have had very positive feedback from the young people and families who attend the sessions.
Susan Scott was paid £1200 through PAYE in August 2023 as payment for work on our summer holiday activity program. No other directors have completed any paid hours or offered any other type of remuneration.
