The companies activities in the financial year ending 31/10/2023 have benefitted the community as follows:- Completed the first cohort of the Internationally Recruited Midwives Welcome Programme, 4 internationally recruited midwives (IRM) were supported as they tackled life as midwives in the UK. Buddies were given supervision and support and a small budget for an activity that will benefit the IRM. Following this first cohort, work is due to be undertaken to improve this and deliver a programme in the future to support more IRM.- Organised the first South Asian Nursing and Midwifery Conference in the UK in collaboration with British Sikh Nurses. This took place at Warwick University Conference and was a success. Over 50 nurses and midwives attended from around the UK to hear from inspirational leaders in the nursing and midwifery profession. This event was a way to bridge the gap between the leaders in the field and those junior staff – delegates were given the opportunity to network in circles they do not always have the chance to at conferences. This event provided a space for South Asian nurses and midwives.- Held the second Through the Dark Lens Online Conference, a conference with international reach that celebrates black and brown excellence in perinatal health. Provided networking opportunities, inspiration and best practice to those working in the perinatal arena. This also was an opportunity for those from different vocations within perinatal health to come together and share ideas/practices. Following this second conference, a plan was made to hold a 3rd conference in person to tackle issues that affect black and brown birthing communities.- Attended conferences and talks throughout this financial year as a voice for the South Asian communities, the purpose of our involvement in these was to highlight the issues facing the community as well as the work that is being undertaken by the community- Membership – supported midwives and student midwives with job applications, career advice. Held a retreat that allowed ASAM members to wind down and relax – this involved mindfulness exercises, a chance to debrief and plan future projects. Also held member sessions to focus on celebrating achievements as well as weekly wellbeing sessions formembers.
The companies stakeholders are the South Asian birthing communities, members, midwives, student midwives, organisations that the company has collaborated or worked with or have supported us.Feedback forms are sent to stakeholders following every ASAM event, feedback is then taken to the Directors meeting to work on for the subsequent events.A report highlighting ASAM’s work is due to be published.
