Over the course of the last financial year we have delivered a programme of high-quality art activities and have worked with a wide range of partners, community and cultural organisations and individuals. In Oct 2022 – February 2023 we delivered Mariana’s Song; a multi-sensory, interactive cinematic experience aimed at engaging older people with advanced dementia living in care homes. We partnered with Dr Henry Collingham, Northumbria University to design an experience and South Tees Council to deliver the programme with 4 care homes in Redcar and Middlesbrough. As part of the project, we also designed a training programme for activities coordinators in care homes that was delivered over 6 weeks. From January 2023 – April 2024, we developed Worlds Apart – a theatre production co-created with young unpaid carers, adult unpaid carers and older people living in care homes. The play explored themes around ageing, disability, unpaid care, family dynamics and change. We worked with a young performer (aged 16), which was her first professional show credit. The play was performed at Northern Stage over 4 nights and also featured a showcase of creative work developed by our Writers Who Care programme. From January 2023 – April 2024 – we delivered a programme of creative writing workshops for our Writers Who Care programme, giving them opportunities to work with more artists, develop their skills and provide a space for support and connection. From April 2023 – September 2024 we went into development for Milk, Two Sugars – a sensory and immersive theatre show for older people with advanced dementia. The show aims to address the issue of sub-optimal hydration in care homes through encouraging healthy hydration. The show features puppetry, live music, interactive sensory exploration and storytelling. The show is delivered in large groups and at people’s bedsides. April 2023 – July 2023 – we delivered The Playfulness Project, a intergenerational community linking project connecting young people in primary schools with older people with dementia. The project aims to spread joy, encourage imagination, build confidence and allow space for connection, compassion and play!
We have 8 members on our advisory board which consists of cultural sector workers, researchers, university professionals, care home staff, teachers and unpaid carers. As an advisory board we met quarterley to discuss the trajectory of the company and to seek advice and guidance. For each project we also held project-specific consultation meetings with the communities we were seeking to work with. For example, ahead of The Playfulness Project we held a online project planning meeting with teachers and care staff in schools and care homes in the areas we were seeking to engage with which helped to shape the project. This was done at the earliest stage of the project before seeking funding. We developed partnerships with- South Tees Council, Sunderland Culture and Northumbria University who funded and supported Mariana’s Song.- Sunderland Carers, Arts Council England who partnered with us to deliver Worlds Apart- Sir James Knott who funded the Writers Who Care programme- Cultural Spring and Arts Council England and 3 care homes in Sunderland who partnered with us to deliver Milk, Two Sugars- The National Lottery who funded The Playfulness Project
Included in our accounts – Poppy Crawshaw and Liv Hunt (Olivia Hunt) two of the company directors deliver the majority of the programme of activities under Woven Nest Theatre.
