SCOUSE FLOWERHOUSEOn January 31st 2023, Scouse Flowerhouse Ltd was established as a Community Benefit Society and a member of Coops UK. Polly Moseley was one of 12 co-founders, and the leader of the founding process. During 2023, Polly organised meetings for the founder members and for the members, with members’ active participation through talks and collective presentations, and some founder members also organised activities, fieldwork and events, particularly in the summer of 2023.Community Benefit: the Community Benefit Society as a membership organisation is set up to deliver community benefits from wildflowers, which include wellbeing, sense of purpose and collective wellbeing from sowing events, ecological/public education from bringing high calibre gardeners and speakers and encouraging exchange between community and school groups. PollyPort CIC was central to maintaining public and community engagement and to ensuring the social and cultural legacy of the National Wildflower Centre in Knowsley now has a future.EVERTON PARKPollyPort CIC delivered drawing workshops to 6 school groups with Food for Thought in July 2023, and took on the direct management of the establishment of a carbon capture garden in the neglected old Everton Pond and Fountains space with some seed funding from LCC Highways. The substrate of concrete waste, demolition waste and biochar was delivered in summer 2023, too late in the season for a summer flowering. PollyPort CIC hired a set of silk flags and flag poles for the summer MiniRoads cycling camp (for ages 2-9). PollyPort assisted with healthy catering and activities related to the wider park and plantings over the summer activities, and produced a Hallowe-en event for local children in the Nature Garden with a giant lantern puppet.Community Benefit: the Pond Garden space was brought back to life with colourful flags and joyous activities. The Hallowe’en event with traditional. Gaelic games and live music (Nick Branton on sax) and puppets was well attended, and feedback from families in the community was fantastic.CVANNW and MANCHESTER CONSULTANCIESPolly Moseley delivered on these and both enhanced community networks: understanding of artistic practice relating to environment and communities and understanding of circular economy and investment required for seed production.HERITAGE EVENT - SLAVERY AT ST GEORGE’S: WHO LIES HERE?PollyPort CIC partnered with Everton’s Grade 1-listed St George’s Church to host a lecture by Malik Al Nasir, who is a doctoral researcher at Cambridge University, studying his ancestry, which includes Samuel Sandbach, who is buried in St George’s Graveyard and who was involved in profiting from the slave trade. Malik’s Guyanese ancestry also includes slaves.Community Benefit: Many community leaders and members from L8 came to Everton for this event which was really well attended and served to break down barriers between South and North Liverpool, in the recognition that Liverpool’s shameful slavery history is part of Everton and North Liverpool’s heritage. This event was acknowledged as groundbreaking by the Liverpool Diocese.
Scouse Flowerhouse & CVANNW: Building capacity to be more responsive to ideas for new sites coming from community members and 160+ membership with 12 Founder Members. School groups, engineering companies, artists and landowners amongst those engaging and contributing to programme.Everton history groups: local history groups and those involved in slave histories /hidden histories brought together with a co-production with St George’s, Everton and Writing on the wall.Alongside delivering planting, drawing and games for children on the Everton Pond Garden, PollyPort CIC continued to gather views from parents and local residents. PollyPort brought together experienced plantspeople to advise on the planting scheme and bring cuttings and plants. PollyPort CIC worked very closely with Peloton Liverpool to bring activities and some catering to the site when the cycling sessions were on, partners included Jackie Swanson and Liverpool Lantern Company.
