The Nest Southwest Community Interest Company (The Nest) runs various support groups for women, people who menstruate and their families in Exeter. The company was formed in 2019. In 2022- 2023 we have benefited the community in the following ways:- The Nest hosted 38 antenatal sessions. These peer support groups were open to all women and birthing people in Exeter and nearby. Many of these women are first time mums, often with no family nearby. The group has given them a sense of community with other people who are going through the same life-changing experience as them. On average 5-10 people attend each week, some have been coming consistently throughout their pregnancy and continue to join after the birth and help talk with other pregnant mums and birthing people giving peer support and sharing positive stories creating a very loyal group of beneficiaries. Alongside the fortnightly pregnancy group we hold a follow on weekly group for new parents and their babies, as well as a weekly Walk & Talk, and termly ‘Core Restore’ exercise class. Our private WhatsApp groups are well used for chat, sharing ideas, and asking for help between meetings. Strong friendships have resulted from this. Research shows that increased well-being in pregnancy and birth means less mental health problems, better birth outcomes, less unnecessary interventions, lower rates of postnatal depression, higher breastfeeding rates and long-term effects for both mother and baby. There was a total of 190 recorded attendances over the 38 sessions.- The Nest hosted 45 Baby and New Parent and baby ‘Nestlings’ groups in Exeter. These peer support groups are a follow on from Nesters antenatal group to give new parents a chance to continue meeting with other new families and their new babies. These groups focus on well-being for the birthing person and put their experience at the centre. There are strong safeguarding policies in place, and we work with local healthcare services for two-way referrals, but generally new parents self-refer and book themselves in.There was a total of 653 attendances over the 45 sessions. - Both Nesters and Nestlings are supported by The Nest team of volunteers called the Perinatal Peer Support Network, local mums and birthing people who we recruit and train to be peer supporters in the perinatal groups. - The Nest trialled a Baby Loss Cafe for people who have lost a baby and looking for peer support and a safe space to share their grief. We ran 3 sessions and they were reasonably well attended with support from local baby loss charity ‘Sands’. - The Nest ran 10 Menopause Cafe and peer support sessions. These supportive spaces are open to local people to come and talk about all things perimenopause and menopause related. - The Nest ran 8 Meno Monday Menopause peer support groups. These are different from the Menopause Cafe in that they are a place for speakers on interesting topics and more peer support. - The Nest recruited, continued to support a team of 4 ‘Nest Friends’ as Menopause Peer Support volunteers. These volunteers support the menopause groups. - There were 52 attendances to the menopause groups.- The Nest started a monthly peer support group for women and people who have periods. This friendly inclusive group attracted interest from the LBTQIAplus community. - The Nest ran a women’s Well-Being day for women of colour and from diverse cultural backgrounds to create a space for sharing and empowerment.
The company’s stakeholders are women, girls and menstruators in Exeter and surrounding areas. The directors live in Exeter and Exmouth and have worked in this area for many years and have developed the business model based on their professional and personal experiences while talking to local women about what they need. Our weekly and monthly support groups are also regular engagement opportunities where we welcome suggestions and feedback and ideas. Examples of this have been people offering to pay donations to continue our weekly pregnancy group when the funding had run out because of the importance of the group support to their lives, this led us to continue hosting. We use google forms to share surveys to collect feedback and monitor well-being.
There were no other transactions or arrangements in connection with the remuneration of directors, or compensation for director’s loss of office, which require to be disclosed.
No transfer of assets other than for full consideration
