The directors present their report with the financial statements of the company for the period ended 31 October 2023

Principal activities of the company

The company operates a UK Human Rights and Climate Change Research Institute that focuses on developing research and knowledge about the disparities and human rights violations faced by people of African descent. This information is disseminated through research reports available to the public and academics on the company website. In terms of climate change, the company investigates issues related to displacement, poverty, social mobility, and the social integration of Black migrants to the UK as a result of climate change.The company’s mantra, “Because We Are All African by Descent,” reflects its belief in the unity of the human race. In the financial year 2022-2023, the Research Institute has benefited the community through various initiatives:United Nations Legacies Project: Collaborating with UN-OHCHR on the project “The Ongoing Legacies of African Chattel Slavery Globally,” the company continued to address the enduring legacies of colonialism and the Trans-Atlantic and Trans-Saharan slave trades in 2023. Findings from the 2022 Symposium and Presentation were compiled and presented to UN-OHCHR and the Working Group of Experts on People of African Descent (WGEPAD).United Nations WGEPAD UK Country Visit 2022-2023: The report from the coordinated visit plans was presented at the Human Rights Council in October 2023, and the community continues to receive support. Training of civil society members is ongoing.When Black Women Speak: Endorsed by UN Women UK, this project enhances the voices of Black women in the UK and the African Diaspora. It explores contemporary biases faced by Black women, their origins, and effective tools to overcome them. Two events have been held, focusing on biases in education, career progression, migration, travel, health, wellbeing, and social mobility, with a report in progress. A new initiative has begun to research the experiences of displaced females in Senegal and Gambia and compare them to those living in the UK.Climate Change & the African Diaspora: Conducting focus groups to determine the impact of climate change on children and parents in the UK, particularly following the death of Ella Kissi-Debrah. A report is being produced from the collected data. Climate issues globally are being tracked, with data being collected to assess the impact on people of African descent. Comparisons are being made betweenCaribbean countries, the UK, and Africa to evaluate the effects of disasters on global communities.Black Skin - No Sin: Providing educational training and consultation on human rights issues affecting people of African descent in the UK and the broader African diaspora, assisting with EDI training and projects. A report is in progress based on the collected data. An additional project on stop and search initiatives is being formulated.The Windrush Generation Project: Focusing on the vulnerabilities of the Windrush generation and their descendants, this project holds online meetings to create a supportive environment for sharing experiences and identifying needs through data collection. The questionnaire data is being assessed, and a report is being formulated.Birthmark of Africa Fellowship Programme: Offering university students and researchers hands-on experience in researching human rights and climate change issues across various disciplines, with a one-year duration.Community Volunteer Programme: Engaging the community in volunteer roles such as Research Volunteer, Events Volunteer, and Media Volunteer. Volunteers receive training, broaden their network, and connect with international civil society, academics, NGOs, activists, campaigners, and the public.Through these initiatives, the company actively supports the community and contributes to advancing human rights and addressing the climate change impacts on people of African descent.
