Year Ending: 31 March 2024

Company activities and impact

The company has provided Taekwondo classes to members of the community on a means-tested basis since its conception, including free for those that met the criteria. Taekwondo, like most martial arts and sports, is beneficial for both physical and mental well-being. As a diverse group of coaches, voluntary members and athletes, we have provided support for a variety of members of the community, irrespective of their gender, heritage, culture or background. Five Lions Academy CIC has also held workshops and classes within schools situated in areas that qualify under the index of high deprivation. This has resulted in attracting youth from under-privilaged backgrounds away from anti-social behaviour and towards community cohesion and positive behaviour. This has also resulted in improve access to extracurricular opportunities and reducing inactivity. Without discriminating on gender or age, membership numbers grew exponentially over the period and continue to grow, with a number of members migrating from other clubs nationally to provide support due to their values aligning with those of Five Lions Academy CIC.The club's outreach programme continues from strength to strength, having provided local migrant communities with a mutual base, resulting in the reduction of language and cultural barriers and setting the foundation of building bridges. The team have also held workshops to help both athletes and parents with their academic learning, resulting in great success across both.Having hosted an International Championship in early 2023 within the City of Culture as well as the prospective of establishing a full time venue in 2024 has further embedded the future of the club both in the local community as well as nationally. With current athletes now as National Champions as part of the members, interest is further growing in the community as a respected centre of excellence for demonstrating both discipline, the result of hard work and commitment as well as community cohesion.
