The Aspiring Medic's Support (TAMS) - Directors' ReportCompany Number: 11681631 Reporting Period: 01/12/2022 - 30/11/2023Principal Activities:The Aspiring Medic's Support (TAMS) is a community interest company dedicated to aiding aspiring and current medical students from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds (SEDB). Established in 2018, TAMS has consistently worked towards mitigating the barriers faced by these students in their pursuit of medical education. Our vision is to ensure that every aspiring and current medical student from a SEDB in the United Kingdom can access equal opportunities in the field of medicine.During the past financial year, TAMS has continued its commitment to this vision through several key activities:1. Mentorship Programmes: TAMS provided one-on-one mentorship to five students from low-income backgrounds, assisting them through the challenging application process for medical school. This personalized support helps alleviate academic and financial pressures, equipping students with the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed.2. TAMS Scholars Programme: Our flagship initiative, the TAMS Scholars Programme, recruited 15 students from low-income households. This comprehensive two-year programme offers personal and professional development opportunities, including workshops, mentoring, and essential resources such as book vouchers and medical equipment. We are grateful for the continued support from the Royal College of Surgeons of England, which enhances the programme's offerings.3. Educational Outreach:* We have expanded our digital presence, sharing resources and guidance on medical school applications. Our virtual audience has grown to over 1,000 individuals, providing broad access to critical information and advice. This expansion helps ensure that more students, regardless of their geographical or financial limitations, receive the support they need to pursue a career in medicine.Stakeholder Engagement:TAMS has actively engaged with a range of stakeholders to enhance the relevance and impact of our programmes. We collaborated with teachers and schools in local communities to ensure our mentorship services effectively reach the students most in need. Additionally, we worked closely with university staff to foster participation in the TAMS Scholars Programme, ensuring it meets the specific needs of our target students.Our partnerships with national organizations, including the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the Medical Defence Union, have been instrumental in providing additional resources and support. Through listening exercises with all stakeholders, we have refined our initiatives, ensuring that we allocate resources efficiently and equitably. This ongoing dialogue helps us to understand the needs and expectations of our partners, enhancing the quality and reach of our services.Conclusion:The Aspiring Medic's Support remains steadfast in its mission to level the playing field for medical students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Company activities and impact

In the past financial year, The Aspiring Medic's Support (TAMS) has significantly impacted the community by supporting aspiring and current medical students from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds. We mentored five students from low-income backgrounds, guiding them through the complex process of applying to medical school. This personal mentorship helps these students navigate academic and financial challenges, increasing their chances of success.Additionally, we continued our TAMS Scholars Programme, specifically designed for medical students from low-income households. This year, we recruited 15 new scholars, providing them with a comprehensive two-year personal and professional development programme. The programme, endorsed by the Royal College of Surgeons of England, offers workshops, mentoring, and tangible resources like book vouchers and medical equipment, ensuring our scholars are well-equipped for their medical journey.Furthermore, we have expanded our virtual educational outreach, sharing valuable resources and advice on medical school applications. Our online audience has grown to over 1,000 individuals, demonstrating our increasing reach and influence. This digital platform allows us to disseminate critical information broadly, helping more students understand the pathways to a medical career despite financial barriers. Through these activities, TAMS continues to foster equity in medical education and support the aspirations of students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Consultation with stakeholders

The Aspiring Medic's Support (TAMS) has actively consulted with various stakeholders to ensure the effective delivery of our services and the optimal use of our resources. We have engaged with teachers and schools in local communities to accurately target our mentorship services to students from low-income backgrounds who can benefit most from our guidance. This collaboration helps identify and support students early in their medical career journey.Furthermore, we have collaborated with university staff to promote the TAMS Scholars Programme, encouraging broader participation from medical students from disadvantaged backgrounds. This engagement has been crucial in tailoring our programme to meet the specific needs of these students, enhancing their academic and professional development.We also maintain partnerships with national organizations such as the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the Medical Defence Union. These partnerships have been integral in providing additional resources and support to our scholars. With each stakeholder, we have conducted listening exercises to understand their perspectives and needs. This has allowed us to align our services more closely with the requirements of our stakeholders, ensuring that we invest our limited resources effectively and equitably to benefit the community we serve.
