Over the last year, MAPP Learning delivered their annual project, The Back to School Hair Drive. The Back-to-School Hair Drive completely exceeded our expectations this year. Our event attendance exceeded 300 individuals, well above our initial projection of 200-250 attendees. We targeted ourselves to impact 100 children with free natural hair and barbering services – this too was exceeded with our final count of 141 children receiving haircuts and, braided hairstyles on the day. With the high demand for these services, our stylists continued beyond the official end time of the event, after 8:30pm ensuring every child registered received a service. Stationary was distributed as planned to include – scientific calculators (50), A4 lined notebooks (40), Clear Pencil Cases (50), Geometry Sets (52), Erasers (40), Pens & Writing Pencils (30). 150 pieces of school uniform including 2 and 3 pack white shirts sets and, grey school skirts and black trousers were distributed. The Vendors area moved ahead as planned and was comprised of 6 support organisations and businesses including: Emma Education (Free Training / Access to University Courses), Breadline London (Period care IAG, family financial guidance, healthy meal samples and uniform giveaways); Nurture Academy (Accredited Training Courses / “How to Braid” Stall), Restore Eden (Natural Haircare Products), The Satin Moon (Handmade Hair Scrunchies and how to make scrunchies workshop), Holloway Pathfinders Drumming Club (Creative Arts & Craft Stall, Drumming Display and Youth Club information) and Haringey Basketball For All (Basketball session and matches with Coach Benoit).
