Basis of preparing the financial statements |
Significant judgements and estimates |
The preparation of the financial statements requires management to make judgements, estimates and assumptions that affect the amounts supported. These estimates and judgements are continually reviewed and are based on experience and other factors, including expectations of future events that are believed to be reasonable under the circumstances. |
The judgements that the management have made in the process of applying the entity's accounting policies and that have the most significant effect on the amounts recognised in the financial statements are as follows: |
Turnover |
Turnover is measured at the fair value of the consideration received or receivable, excluding discounts, rebates and value added tax. |
Turnover from the sale of plants, fertilizers and chemicals, garden furniture and equipment, is recognised when significant risks and rewards of ownership of the goods have transferred to the buyer, the amount of turnover can be measured reliably, it is probable that the economic benefits associated with the transaction will flow to the company and the costs incurred or to be incurred in respect of the transaction can be measured reliably. This is usually on receipt of payment. |
Tangible fixed assets |
Land and buildings | - |
Plant and machinery etc | - |
Tangible fixed assets are stated at cost or valuation less accumulated depreciation and accumulated impairment losses. Cost includes costs directly attributable to making the asset capable of operating as intended. |
Stocks |
Stocks are valued at the lower of cost and net realisable value, after making due allowance for obsolete and slow moving items. |
Financial instruments |
(i) Cash and cash Equivalents |
Cash and cash equivalents are basic financial instruments and include cash in hand, deposits held at call with banks, and bank overdrafts. |
(ii) Debtors and creditors receivable/payable within one year |
Debtors and creditors with no stated interest rate and receivable or payable within one year are stated at transaction price. Any losses arising from impairment are recognised in the profit and loss account in other administrative expenses. |

2. | ACCOUNTING POLICIES - continued |
Taxation |
Taxation for the year comprises current and deferred tax. Tax is recognised in the Income Statement, except to the extent that it relates to items recognised in other comprehensive income or directly in equity. |
Current or deferred taxation assets and liabilities are not discounted. |
Current tax is recognised at the amount of tax payable using the tax rates and laws that have been enacted or substantively enacted by the balance sheet date. |
Deferred tax |
Deferred tax is recognised in respect of all timing differences that have originated but not reversed at the balance sheet date. |
Timing differences arise from the inclusion of income and expenses in tax assessments in periods different from those in which they are recognised in financial statements. Deferred tax is measured using tax rates and laws that have been enacted or substantively enacted by the year end and that are expected to apply to the reversal of the timing difference. |
Unrelieved tax losses and other deferred tax assets are recognised only to the extent that it is probable that they will be recovered against the reversal of deferred tax liabilities or other future taxable profits. |
Hire purchase and leasing commitments |
Assets acquired under hire purchase are capitalised and depreciated over the expected useful life of the asset. Hire purchase payments are apportioned between the finance charge and the reduction of the outstanding hire purchase liability using the effective interest method. The related obligations, net of future finance charges, are included in creditors. |
Rentals paid under operating leases are charged to profit or loss on a straight line basis over the period of the lease. |
Pension costs and other post-retirement benefits |
The company operates a defined contribution pension scheme. Contributions payable to the company's pension scheme are charged to profit or loss in the period to which they relate. |
Impairment |
Assets not measured at fair value are reviewed for any indication that the asset may be impaired at each balance sheet date. If such indication exists, the recoverable amount of the asset, or the assets cash generating unit, is estimated and compared to the carrying amount. Where the carrying amount exceeds its recoverable amount, an impairment loss is recognised in the profit and loss unless the asset is carried at a revalued amount where the impairment loss is a revaluation decrease. |
