REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES
For The Year Ended 31 March 2024



The trustees who are also directors of the charity for the purposes of the Companies Act 2006, present their report with the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 31 March 2024. The trustees have adopted the provisions of Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019).

OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES
Objectives and aims
The objectives of the charity are to promote and protect the physical and mental health of sufferers from cancer, heart, renal and respiratory disease and physical or mental disability, through the provision of financial assistance, support and the provision of equipment, facilities and related services.

The charity also supports groups and projects that benefit the local community and these can encompass a wide range of activities such as sports, dance and the arts.

There is also indirect support provided for other related charitable organisations in their own fundraising initiatives, as a result of which funds are raised directly by those organisations for distribution to beneficiaries using criteria that is similar to that of Our Aim Appeals.

Significant activities
The trustees have strived to strengthen links established with a wide range of health care providers and social workers to fulfil the main aim of the charity which is to provide grants quickly and efficiently at a time when financial support is most needed.

The charity has organised special appeals which have been of benefit to a wide range of patients and their carers who have been affected by illness, accident or disability. These special appeals are particularly valued by the healthcare professionals who request the funding for projects which they are unable to source elsewhere and which will be of great benefit to their patients.

Grantmaking
The charity invites applications from hospital professionals, general practitioners, social services departments of major hospitals, hospices, community projects and other charities on behalf of patients/clients.

The applications are considered by the trustees and awards are made based on eligibility and available funds.

The turnaround from application to the release of funding is approximately 4 weeks. In exceptional circumstances when the case presented is urgent funds may be released immediately if available.

ACHIEVEMENT AND PERFORMANCE
Charitable activities
It is a source of great satisfaction that the charity is now a valued resource for healthcare professionals and social workers who highly value the support it provides for their patients, in many cases funds have not been able to be sourced anywhere else but due to the wide ranging criteria of Our Aim Appeals this charity has been able to provide the necessary granting.

It is also of great importance and immense value that the charity is able to provide emergency granting in a short space of time. In many cases the recipients of funding are in a position that time is limited or their situation is desperate and the grant is required immediately.

Over the past 12 months applications have been received from hospitals and organisations that have not previously applied as they have become aware of the work of Our Aim.

During the year ended 31st March 2024 the charity achieved total donation and sponsorship income of £149,767 which reflects the hard work of our team to source new donors to replace the many we lost due to the pandemic who ceased to trade. Of course, the current economic climate is still very difficult and we are working harder than ever to maintain the charities income and meet all grants. The charity was able to distribute £120,619 to individuals and families seeking grants directly. The cost of generating income continues to fall due to stringent measures in place to control expenditure and make savings wherever possible. The charity has been able to meet most of the qualifying grant applications during this financial year but applications have increased substantially. Due to the ongoing cost of living crisis many families need urgent assistance. The charity has managed to recruit a new volunteer which is good news, but the main trustee and backbone of the charity sadly died recently and everyone is devastated at this unexpected loss. The charity now has 3 new trustees who have all been associated with the charity for many years and are all going to bring their own strengths and ideas so the charity is in safe hands.

Fundraising activities
Funds are raised by direct appeal to the business community using telesales staff, post and collection boxes.

FINANCIAL REVIEW
Reserves policy
The trustees regularly review the level of reserves held on an annual basis with a view to ensuring that the charity has sufficient resources to fund its activities and also to provide adequate funding to expand and develop the charities work.

The trustees are satisfied that the charity has a sufficient level of reserves to meet its ongoing commitments.

FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS
The new trustees intend to consolidate the charities position as a valued resource of funding to benefit individuals, families and carers who have been affected by cancer, heart, renal and lung disease and mental & physical handicap.

The charity will continue to raise funds directly and to widen co-operation with other registered charities. Unfortunately as this financial year draws to a close we are experiencing the ongoing effects of the cost of living crisis and the charity like most others has been hard hit by the loss of long term donors who are sadly no longer in a position to donate. The charity hopes to weather these difficult economic times and is working hard to secure new donors and fundraisers and to continue to keep expenses to a minimum.

Governing document
The charity is controlled by its governing document, a deed of trust, and constitutes a limited company, limited by guarantee, as defined by the Companies Act 2006.

STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT
Recruitment and appointment of new trustees
Our Aim Appeals has a minimum of three Trustees appointed for various terms of at least two years. New Trustees are recruited by the existing Trustees on the basis of their experience, empathy with and knowledge of the charities work. It is the intention of the current Trustee's to recruit new Trustees with emphasis on skills in commercial, finance and legal fields.

All trustees are subject to an induction programme.

Organisational structure
The current Trustees meet on a regular basis under the chairmanship of Angela Rimmer to develop an operational plan for the future management and direction of the charity. Regular management accounts are available to review the finances of the charity and to plan for the future.

All Trustees give their time freely and no Trustee received remuneration during the year.

Induction and training of new trustees
All trustees are subject to an induction programme.

Risk management
The Trustees have assessed the major risks to which the charity is exposed and are satisfied that systems are in place to mitigate exposure to these risks and that the control systems will be regularly reviewed and updated as necessary with the development and expansion of the charity's activities.

Independent examiner's report to the trustees of Our Aim Appeals ('the Company')
I report to the charity trustees on my examination of the accounts of the Company for the year ended 31 March 2024.

Responsibilities and basis of report
As the charity's trustees of the Company (and also its directors for the purposes of company law) you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Companies Act 2006 ('the 2006 Act').

Having satisfied myself that the accounts of the Company are not required to be audited under Part 16 of the 2006 Act and are eligible for independent examination, I report in respect of my examination of your charity's accounts as carried out under Section 145 of the Charities Act 2011 ('the 2011 Act'). In carrying out my examination I have followed the Directions given by the Charity Commission under Section 145(5) (b) of the 2011 Act.

Independent examiner's statement
I have completed my examination. I confirm that no matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe:

1. accounting records were not kept in respect of the Company as required by Section 386 of the 2006 Act; or
2. the accounts do not accord with those records; or
3. the accounts do not comply with the accounting requirements of Section 396 of the 2006 Act other than any requirement that the accounts give a true and fair view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination; or
4. the accounts have not been prepared in accordance with the methods and principles of the Statement of Recommended Practice for accounting and reporting by charities (applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102)).

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

The members have not required the company to obtain an audit of its financial statements for the year ended 31 March 2024 in accordance with Section 476 of the Companies Act 2006.


The trustees acknowledge their responsibilities for
(a)ensuring that the charitable company keeps accounting records that comply with Sections 386 and 387 of the Companies Act 2006 and
(b)preparing financial statements which give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charitable company as at the end of each financial year and of its surplus or deficit for each financial year in accordance with the requirements of Sections 394 and 395 and which otherwise comply with the requirements of the Companies Act 2006 relating to financial statements, so far as applicable to the charitable company.

These financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the provisions applicable to charitable companies subject to the small companies regime.

1. ACCOUNTING POLICIES

Basis of preparing the financial statements
The financial statements of the charitable company, which is a public benefit entity under FRS 102, have been prepared in accordance with the Charities SORP (FRS 102) 'Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019)', Financial Reporting Standard 102 'The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland' and the Companies Act 2006. The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention.

Income
All income is recognised in the Statement of Financial Activities once the charity has entitlement to the funds, it is probable that the income will be received and the amount can be measured reliably.

Expenditure
Liabilities are recognised as expenditure as soon as there is a legal or constructive obligation committing the charity to that expenditure, it is probable that a transfer of economic benefits will be required in settlement and the amount of the obligation can be measured reliably. Expenditure is accounted for on an accruals basis and has been classified under headings that aggregate all cost related to the category. Where costs cannot be directly attributed to particular headings they have been allocated to activities on a basis consistent with the use of resources.

Grants offered subject to conditions which have not been met at the year end date are noted as a commitment but not accrued as expenditure.

Taxation
The charity is exempt from corporation tax on its charitable activities.

Fund accounting
Unrestricted funds can be used in accordance with the charitable objectives at the discretion of the trustees.

Restricted funds can only be used for particular restricted purposes within the objects of the charity. Restrictions arise when specified by the donor or when funds are raised for particular restricted purposes.

Further explanation of the nature and purpose of each fund is included in the notes to the financial statements.

2. TRUSTEES' REMUNERATION AND BENEFITS

There were no trustees' remuneration or other benefits for the year ended 31 March 2024 nor for the year ended 31 March 2023.
