CANTERBURY CLIMATE ACTION PARTNERSHIP C.I.C.

Company Number: 12379756 (England and Wales)

Year Ending: 31 December 2023

Company activities and impact

During the financial year ending 31 December 2023. the company continued to work closely with members of Canterbury City Council to support their target of net zero carbon emissions by 2030 and also to support their key objectives for addressing the impact of Climate Change on Biodiversity throughout Canterbury and surrounding villages and district. Directors also provided input and feedback on the Council's plans for expending the Levelling-Up Funding awarded in January 2023.On 22nd April the company hosted a joint biodiversity event with Canterbury District Biodiversity Network. The keynote speaker was Paul Whitfield, Director General of Wildwood Trust, based in Wealden Forest Park, Herne Common, Kent. Wildwood Trust is carrying out some very important work with both wildlife and and plant life in the area and one of the key initiatives they have undertaken is the introduction of bison in order to improve the biodiversity in the woodland area. Participants were also able to take part in a panel discussion as part of the event. In June 2023, the company was awarded funding from Canterbury City Council towards an outreach project aimed at members of the local communities in order to help them reduce their household expenditure, with particular reference to saving energy by insulating their homes in order to reduce fuel bills by accessing relevant grants available. In addition, advice and guidance was on offer to help reduce their food bills, other household bills and introducing them to the Canterbury Repair Cafe, which is a very important focus of the company's outreach work. The funding was further increased by a grant from Kent County Council in October 2023 thus enabling the company to extend its outreach work in the communities most affected by climate change and the rising cost of living. On 31st October, the company hosted an event 'The Climate Emergency: what can we do to avert global disaster ?' The event took place during the Canterbury Festival and the keynote speaker was The Rt Hon The Lord Deben, former chairman of the Climate Change Committee (CCC). Following the speech by Lord Deben, there was an interactive panel discussion with a wide range of questions and comments from the audience of circa eighty local residents and representatives from local businesses and the three universities. The panel comprised Revd Canon Andrew Dodd of Canterbury Cathedral, Lisa Carlson of the Business Improve District for Canterbury (BID), Rachael Kersten-Freeman, youth activist, and Dr Carl Wright ,Chairman of Canterbury Climate Action Partnership. The final key event of the year was the company's second Climate Action Festival which took place on 9th December. As with the previous year, the event comprised a wide range of stalls holders including Canterbury City Council. Mansfields Fruit Farm, Plastic Free Canterbury, Canterbury Alliance for Sustainable Transport (CAST) and many more. A series of talks took place throughout the day on a wide range of topics relating to Climate Action, Biodiversity and the Circular Economy. The event concluded with the second year of Climate Action Awards with an additional category of 'Partnerships' making a total of seven categories : Community Action-Civil Society Organisations,Residents Associations,Faith Groups,Youth Groups and Charities, Education-Secondary and Primary, Education-Higher and Further, Individual Action-Carbon Heroes-individuals and households, Business-Small and Medium Enterprises, Corporates, Agriculture, Business Improvement District.

Consultation with stakeholders

The company's stakeholders are members of the local community in the towns and villages surrounding Canterbury, which includes individuals, households, community organisations and businesses. In addition, the company works closely with the local council (Canterbury City Council ) and the county council (Kent County Council) to gain a wider understanding of the concerns of local people with regards to Climate Change and Biodiversity. We continued to have meetings with our stakeholders and during the year it became clear that a number of our stakeholders and in particular individuals and households, were struggling to cope with the increased cost of living and therefore unable to consider and address the impacts of Climate Change. We therefore applied to from the two councils identified above and organised two outreach events where those affected by the increased cost of living could learn how to access some of the funding and grants available to address their issues of concern ie heating bills, food bills and other day-to-day expenditure. This was achieved by working with the relevant energy consultants, the Food Bank, the Canterbury Repair Cafe, and other relevant organisations. In addition, the company's joint Biodiversity Event with the Canterbury District Biodiversity Network enabled members of our local community to gain a better understanding of the impact of Climate Change on wildlife and how they could play their part in addressing some of the issues. Finally, the company's event entitled 'The Climate Emergency: what can we do to avert global disaster?' with our keynote speaker The Rt Hon The Lord Deben, former chairman of the Climate Change Committee (CCC) followed by the interactive panel discussion with a wide range of questions and comments from the audience provided an excellent opportunity for members of the local community to gain a wider knowledge and understanding of the issues surrounding Climate Change and the impact on both human life and biodiversity.
