Root Cause Project works with military veterans to provide a safe space for them to relax, reboot and repair using the restorative force of nature. We offer a relaxed environment, free from the distractions of a busy lifestyle, where we encourage and foster the camaraderie and sense of family and belonging that ex-servicemen and women often miss when they are discharged. This helps them to adjust to civilian life and resettle into a routine that is often alien to them, or helps prepare them for life outside.Root Cause Project also acts as a signposting service to help veterans and their families receive the right help and support from other agencies.During the financial year 2022 - 2023 the company's activities have benefited the community of North Devon in the following ways:- 2 volunteers have received training and mentoring to increase and improve their awareness of mental health and physical ailments associated with conflict, such as Combat Stress, and the skills to deliver bushcraft sessions.- Initiated a wellbeing directory that aims to pool together the local support and care providers (Mental Health/Welfare Officers/Breakfast groups/GP practices and Community Teams).- Helped raise awareness and our community relations by encouraging cohesion and collaborative working with an enhanced sense of inclusion.- Ran our first pilot to gauge the demand for our service and to test out the model for future roll out.- Prepared the site, while helping to improve the local environment; support the local wildlife and forestry through replanting trees; improving habitats and building sustainable structures to deliver our sessions.- Created awareness and visibility of the project.- Purchase of equipment to maintain and improve the site and deliver the sessions.
- Attended Mental Health Alliance networking meetings to secure initial grant and raise visibility.- Consulted with the Army Benevolent Fund (ABF) to secure funding.- Liaised with the local Royal Barracks to discuss collaboration and with other veteran charities in the local area.- Zoom meetings with similar CIC in other areas of the UK to discuss best practice.
