This project has had real impact and far reaching benefits for the people involved and the wider communities we have engaged with. We have reached all of the communities we hoped to, and more. By fostering a culture of co-creation within the team and the project, everyone's voices have been heard and we have centred otherwise marginalised peoples in our work at all times. Being part of the communities we have worked with has been absolutely essential to garner a trusting and reciprocal relationship.LGBTQ+ CENTREDBy maintaining a safe space in both the rehearsal room and at events, we have made inroads in bringing the hard to engage LGBTQ communities to our project. We have young people express sincere gratitude for allowing this safe space particularly within the Black LGBTQ community as there is no specific organisation within Derby that caters for their needs.BLACK-BROWN LEDLeading the organisation are Black LGBTQ people who champion visibility and acceptance. Traditional tensions between the LGBTQ and the Black communities are still prevalent and can end up in physical violence. We are breaking down those barriers by normalising being Black and LGBTQ in the same spaces such as Carnival and Pride.UNDER 24sWe have reached so many young people and are very proud that we have managed to engage with this community where face to face engagement is difficult due to the pervasive digital presence in their lives.OVER 50sAs the organisation is led by women over 50, we are proud to have reached so many other men and women of this age who have been worried about engaging with other people since Covid. We have a strong link with the over 50s and look forward to building on that.DEAF, DISABLED, ND COMMUNITIESAs a disabled/ND led organisation we really wanted to engage with as many people as possible from these communities. We have managed to reach many people and even appeared at the Wired Differently Festival which is specifically for ND and those with mental health issues.SANCTUARY SEEKERSWe have also managed to make a massive impact on the refugee community and will be working closely with them in the future. This was a fantastic achievement for us and we are very happy we have developed strong relationships in that community.This project has been instrumental in allowing the organisation and artists involved to develop as individuals, as a team and as a respected arts offer in the local landscape.We have worked very hard to raise the profile of the organisation as well as the communities we represent and work in. This includes radio interviews on BBC Radio Derby, BBC Radio Nottingham, podcasts and local newspapers interviews. We have used these platforms to bring awareness to charitable organisations that support vulnerable communities and need supporting on a wide scale. This project has allowed us to build strong and sustainable relationships with other organisations that will support us in the future. These include but are not limited to: Mansfield & District Council, EMCCAN, Derby CAN, Derby Feste, Purple Theatre, Deda, Sure Start centres, Wired Differently, Wild Rumpus, Quad, Derby Theatre and more.It has been a challenging project as there has been a lot of work put into building the structure of the organisation and networking. We were approached by many organisations that wanted us to work with them so we had to make some difficult decisions about who we could and couldn't work with due to time and resources. We managed this by communicating both internally and externally about who we were and where our priorities lay. This ensured everyone was on the same page and if we had to say no to someone, we were clear about why. Other challenges included putting a new team together. We learnt a great deal about the complexities of combining both professional artists and community participants. In the future we will have a strong team that have tried and tested relationships with us and experience in the industry. We will be broadening the creative team to include differently skilled practitioners, allowing for more prep time to upskill the creative team from the community in multi-disciplinary practices. We learnt that we need to consider storage and upkeep of resources/materials to maintain and grow the trajectory of the business. We hope this will include our own space. We would like to further diversify the traditional notions of carnival by adding a carnival queen/’kween’ to our repertoire in order to elevate the LGBTQ+ communities in the Black/Brown communities where traditional tensions are still prevalent. We hope to source and utilise specialist access workers in the future in order to capitalise on previous successes and reach Deaf/disabled communities/those seeking sanctuary even more efficiently.Upcycling and recycling have been a real revelation for us. We plan to use even more sustainable resources in the future. We have also had pledges of support in kind from even more partners such as Lewis from Inspire Yourself Troupe and EMCCAN.This project has been vital to set up the long term sustainability of the organisation and is set to launch the artistic careers of several young people.We couldn't have hoped for better outcomes.
