The financial year of 2023-24 saw rapid growth for the work at Downtown Pompey, it meant we were able to deliver many projects at once and start the development of a new programme/ way of working that hadn’t been explored before within the organisation. We have initiated a variety of project that have collaborated and supported community development through access to arts, culture and Heritage. We have explored this through 2 strands, these have been ‘major’ projects and ‘minor’ projects all with an aim of spreading our version of Queer Joy, creating bridges between communities and supporting LGBTQ+ communities through an intersectional lens all projects, engagements and workshops have been free of charge to participate and the inclusion of sundries (travel, food and drink) has been an important part of the process to engage with communities:Opal Nights (April 2023) A series of workshops and performances by participants and members of the LGBTQ+ community that aims to ‘centre stage’ individual stories for a wide audience. The project aimed to develop a variety of skills in participants but mainly to create communal languages between individuals and intersectional communitiesSticky Floors & Palm Trees (May2023- Feb-2024) A series of public engagements and workshops exploring the 80’s clubbing scene in Portsmouth, these public engagements included workshops, interviews, events and culminated in the a piece of devised immersive theatre working with Queer artists from a variety of disciplines.Queer Mapping of Portsmouth Project (Jan 2023-current) A series of workshops that explored the spaces to which LGBTQ+ individuals experienced individuality safety but ultimately the experiences of Queer Joy. The work is ongoing and the amalgamation of the completed artistic work by participants will contribute to a larger piece of communal visual arts.Days of Queer Joy (September – December 2024) Due to the renegotiations and consultation of the mapping project this campaign continues to aim at bringing new individuals into the Downtown Pompey fold, the aim of the campaign is for Queer inclusion widely across the city and to spark conversations between communities that otherwise wouldn’t have conversations and interactions. This malleable assets has enabled us to provide low stakes ‘drop in’ opportunities at Art Galleries, Museums, Theatres, Bookshops and in public spaces such as parks and markets. This campaign also included digital assets and printed assets.
Within all our work we are constantly consulting to ensure that our work is the most effective it can be. We capture this in a variety of ways: through survey, 1-1, partner engagement. We have a volunteer board as part of Downtown Pompey that ensure that evaluation of projects, pre, mid and post, projects we meet 6 times a year and work through a variety of projects, everyone has a particular strand of which they are responsible for consulting with.
