COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT

Year Ending: 30 November 2023

Company activities and impact

The CIC activities in the past year, briefly, include, planting an orchard of fruit and nut trees and tending the trees already planted and preparing for future planting. We acquired some second-hand poly tunnels, dismantling them and transporting them to Burrington. Saving money costs time and they have non-standard foundations which will take some time to sort out. Once erected they will provide a dry area for working as well as for growing plants. We set out and planted an orchard of about 70 apple and pear trees. They are mainly old traditional types (one dating from 1598), and will help maintain these heritage varieties that would otherwise be lost to the demands of supermarkets.Contact was made with a fruit grower/researcher in Norway and comparisons made between the methods used there and traditionally in the UK. So far we have kept closer to a traditional layout.Representatives from the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) carried out a survey of recently planted saplings and were able to confirm that they were healthy. We were surprised to learn that the government definition of the word ‘origin’ allows its meaning to change during the plant’s lifetime. How strange. We can no longer be sure where our plants really begin their lives.Orders were placed with tree nurseries for stock to be planted in the New Year including fruit and nut trees, hazel for coppicing and seeds for germinating ourselves. Coppicing is a rural skill that is dying out but is useful for providing a regenerative source of fuel, as well as material for use in horticulture. We have begun to build a library of (actual) books which directly relate to agroforestry and growing food but also includes related subjects to do with our use of the land and resources. We hope this will develop into a library and provide both a theoretical background and inspiration for those involved.

Consultation with stakeholders

The CIC’s stakeholders comprise: participants; local people who might be involved in growing and preparing food including school children; others, further afield, involved in agroforestry or permaculture.Contact with a local school resulted in a positive response and we’re hoping for similar from others. Volunteers continue to have an impact and while no formal consultation has been carried out, they offer suggestions and initiate activities.
