Buddies for All is a buddying scheme that supports disabled people with social and leisure activities in London. We support people with physical; sensory; and hidden disabilities, such as chronic illnesses or neurological conditions; aged 18-65. Since we started buddying individuals together; we have successfully matched over eighty disabled people in the London borough of Lewisham supporting them to find a buddy on the telephone; through online video chat or providing face-to-face support by meeting in person for walks, coffee meet ups, bowling and pizza nights thus, helping them to overcome social isolation and loneliness they have been experiencing. Our volunteer buddies support disabled people via the telephone or video platforms such as Zoom or Google Meet. Buddies also offer in-person face-to-face support for individuals who wish to access their local community to attend their favourite sporting or cultural events with the help of a volunteer buddy. Social activities could include: Going for a walk Meeting for a coffee Going to a concert Going to the theatre Going to a football match or other sporting event Going to the cinema Going out to eat Going to the pub Attending a class activity together such as art Having a night outHaving a simple conversation or participating in a social activity alongside their buddy will mean our beneficiaries are less socially isolated. This will improve their confidence; and increase their independence giving the disabled people who we support the opportunity to build social connections. Having the support of a buddy will lead to a disabled person experiencing increased enjoyment and happiness from their social interaction with a buddy. The end goal of a buddy relationship would be for our beneficiaries to build strong relationships across their community with other like-minded individuals. Outcomes such as increased confidence; independence; and social connections will help more disabled people reach their potential and overcome social isolation at the earliest possible stage of their relationship with Buddies for All and their buddy.
