This has been a busy year for the CIC with many projects benefitting the communities that we serve in both Brighton and Newhaven and surrounding areas. We continued our work with the schools in Brighton’s socio-economically deprived areas creating “Schools Out” which was broadcast on Latest TV.We have continued to run the Diploma in Streaming Technologies, in partnership with the Job Centres in Newhaven, Lewes, Brighton and Eastbourne, a skills transfer programme for the unemployed, mentoring them in content creation, filming, editing, post-production. They create short films which are then broadcast on terrestrial television and streamed on many platforms. On successful completion of the course they are awarded a nationally accredited. Over 50% got paid work as a direct result of completing the programme. We continue to work with The Regeneration Team at Lewes Council to create positive features about Newhaven and surroundings to counter the neglect and bad reputation, restoring a sense of civic pride and duty. We have also created a partnership with the Making It Happen team. They are funded by Sussex Community Development Fund to support neighbourhood schemes that combat loneliness and isolation. We have created a series of 12 programmes, broadcast weekly on Latest TV and now repeated, showing the great work of the groups and how they help individuals in their communities. We have filmed the activities at grassroots level – all feedback received has been hugely positive, such that they plan further work with us.We are running cultural events that are inclusive and diverse giving opportunity to groups that do not have a platform and usually denied access to the world of television and modern digital skills. We ran the 2nd Ukraine International Film Festival, giving welcome and opportunities to Ukrainian Refugees. We were commissioned by BHCC to help the refugees create their own CIC and support them to stage events. We ran the ‘What A Nice World’ 23 Festival, a series of musical events with ‘tolerance’ and togetherness as their theme. Highlights were the staging of The Betrayed World, the anti-genocide opera to sell out performances nightly and rave reviews, The Ukrainian Music Festival, Siren, an LGBTQIA+ activist band and a collaboration with Alabama, home of Martin Luther King to stage fringe events. Film Pride again ran successfully in association with Brighton Pride, attracting many audience members and watched by thousands on television. facilitated many LGBTQ+ events. Similarly we ran festivals for the black community, Syrian refugees. We ran the Holocaust Memorial Day commemoration for Brighton and Hove Council. All our activities demonstrate diversity and inclusion. The communities feel welcome and have a sense of pride and achievement seeing their own talent showcased. We focus our activities on our nearest communities to the CIC which are:East Brighton - These communities are largely young and deprived, often in poverty and often poor education.Kemptown This is primarily the LGBTQ+ area of Brighton and known as The Gay Village. Central Brighton.Newhaven and nearby areas
We have constant discussion and consultations with the diverse communities. Our senior management team are very diverse, and include from the black community, the Jewish Community, Ukrainian refugees, the LGBTQIA+ community. All consulted extensively with their communities on the activities to be undertaken, They are central to running these events and lessons are learnt and applied constantly. All projects are formally evaluated including feedback for all stakeholders. All evaluations have been accepted by the relevant funders. We consult regularly with the Job Centres and have attended many face-to-face meetings with claimants to hear their views. We ask all participants at the end of every programme and take note and act upon any recommendations. Our main stakeholders are:Brighton communities in the disadvantaged areasBrighton’s LGBTQ+ communityBrighton’s BAME communityBHCC Lewes District CouncilBrighton’s city leadersNewhaven’s leadersEast Sussex CollegeJob Centres in Newhaven and Lewes, Brighton and Eastbourne,Schools in socio-economically deprived areasAll grassroots organisations in the city with whom projects have been devisedAll our funders – Arts Council, BFI, Rainbow Fund, BHCC, UK Shared Prosperity Fund, Aviva, Tesco, SCDA, Other small funders
