COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT

THE CODIDACT FOUNDATION CIC

Company Number: 13032478 (England and Wales)

Year Ending: 30 November 2023

Company activities and impact

The company runs a website with the purpose of sharing knowledge among communities focused around particular topic areas. Between December 2022 and November 2023, the involved communities have benefitted in the following ways: Improved technical support for the community by completing the process of setting up the website on better hardware/servers for improved performance begun the previous year. In addition, software improvements reduced the requirements on the hardware. Adding a new section to the site, called ‘proposals’, with the aim of streamlining the process of gathering users for and the planning of new communities. As this planning is now in one single, easy to find location, it is now easier for everyone to find the relevant information on potential new sub-communities/sub-sites and contribute their ideas and comments. General software improvements for more functionality and ease of use, such as improvements to searching and filtering site content, improving the community/user experience and fulfilling community requests.

Consultation with stakeholders

We have an email address for general questions. In addition, we have identified four main groups of stakeholders, which may have some overlap with each other: Developers: Communication is done via Github, a Discord server and an additional ‘community’ site. This doesn’t change the aims of the functionality of the website, although has helped define how development is and will be done and has been used to update the roadmap for the future development of the site. Moderators and users: Communication is done via chat, a ‘meta site’ and a ‘proposals site’. This has led to approximately 200 major and minor changes, ranging from bug fixes, clarifying exactly how wanted features (e.g. more moderation and site maintenance functionality) should work, as well as adding new features to the site design (such as improved search functionality, filtering and sorting). The new proposals site streamlines the process for forming new communities based on current and potential users’ needs and wants. In addition, on our ‘meta site’, users raised concerns about content made by generative AI (such as ChatGPT), to which we responded by implementing a default network-wide policy about such content based on these concerns. External communities with a private instance: Communication is done via a Discord server and the same ‘meta’ and ‘community’ sites as the users. This has led to bug fixes, improved customisability and a user guide for setting up an external instance of the software.
