Review of Business We opened the Dorking Community Fridge in September 2017 with the mission to save good, surplus food from landfill. We started by collecting food from the local supermarkets with the aim of saving perhaps 5 tonnes of food that year. We quickly realised how much surplus food was available to us from charities like FareShare, and in the first year we managed to save 35 tonnes from being wasted. We expanded rapidly, opening a second Fridge and Community Cafe in Dorking in 2018, a further fridge in North Leatherhead in 2019, and buying a refrigerated van in 2019 to put on a Mobile Fridge service to reach remote rural areas. During lockdown we became a doorstep bag drop service to those referred to us from social care, schools, MVDC and churches. At the height, we were packing over 1000 parcels a week and shifting over 10 tonnes of food. From March to December 2020 we packed 30,000 food parcels. Our wonderful team of 185 volunteers are selfless, giving, kind and enthusiastic and have come out, packed, delivered, and helped in all weathers during the year. At this time, our aim was to help those who would benefit most from our food; those shielding, those who have lost their jobs, those with illness and disability, and the elderly and isolated. We are all about unconditional love! We frequently receive messages telling us how delighted our bag recipients are, how lovely it is to see a friendly face once a week, often the only contact they have had. Our Fridge users tell us that they have not eaten so healthily, usually unable to afford the food in our bags. Our fridges on local social housing estate have been amazing community projects bringing the people together and providing services such as visits from the DWP, job application support from Clarion Futures and accessible exercise classes. After coming out of the pandemic, we have changed our operation, leasing a warehouse, buying an additional van and implementing food hygiene and health and safety measures. This increased our management and administration workload three-fold. We have been extremely proactive and successful in obtaining grants to offset the increased overheads. We were delighted and privileged to have been the recipients of the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service. We have now fully reverted to opening our hubs and mobile stops to the public and we regularly see queues of people waiting for over an hour to access our good surplus food. We have 14 locations, opening 21 times per week and continue to review our operating processes, trialling new locations to optimise the reduction of food waste and support those still struggling through the Cost of Living Crisis. During the last year we collected 237,350kg of food which equates to 527,444 meals and helped around 896 households. 355 of these households have children under 18 years old, 331 households have no children and 40 households have a disability. Most of these households revisit us each week. We were awarded additional funding from the National Lottery and Community Foundation for Surrey, as well as donations from community groups, local businesses and individuals. We were very grateful for funding received from the Mark Benevolent Fund which enabled us to buy a new van to replace an existing one. We received some funding from Hubbub to run slow cooker courses at our Leatherhead hub. These have been running successfully with each participant receiving a slow cooker.

During the last year Mid Surrey Community Fridges has; - Collected 237,350kg of food which equates to 527,444 meals. - Helped around 896 households, of these, 355 households have children under 18 years old and 40 households have a disability. Most of these households revisit us each week. - Run slow cooker courses at our Leatherhead hub with each participant receiving a slow cooker. - Operated out of 14 locations, opening 21 times per week. - Provided signposting and support for residents most in need; job application support, Universal Credit support and a friendly face for the many elderly, disabled and isolated in our communities. - Provided volunteering opportunities for 158 people who tell us the opportunity has improved their mental health, given them a purpose and formed new friendships.
Clarion Futures We have regular meetings with Clarion Futures, the charitable arm of Clarion Housing. We receive funding from them for our Goodwyns and Leatherhead Community Fridges, both of which are on Clarion housing estates. We support many Clarion residents, supplying food, socialisation and signposting to Clarion job support services. The Community Fridge is a lifeline for the isolated at Goodwyns. Leatherhead Community Hub The Leatherhead Community Hub is now open with a Community Cafe. An Advice Cafe is opening at the same time as the Community Fridge which offers support from the Citizens Advice Bureau, Christians Against Poverty and Epsom Foodbank. Department for Work and Pensions, Mole Valley Employment and Skills Hub, and Citizens Advice Bureau visit our Leatherhead hub for monthly drop in sessions.
The total Directors' Remuneration is £60,880. There were no other transactions or arrangements in connection with the remuneration of directors, or compensation for director's loss of office, which require to be disclosed.
